Burpp!!! The secret's out.

Brilliantly written, straight to the point ('fat free' sauce), with plethora of real life examples on how to gain competitive advantage in a fiercely competitive corporate world. The book gives you unadulterated ('organically' home grown) ingredients to challenge the status quo, think laterally and think out of the box. It's concise, yet comprehensive; make you think hard.

The author has done a seamlessly impossible job to explain the complex, convoluted, corporate conundrum, full of dynamically moving parts, in 12 simple ('digestible') ingredients. Read the book cover to cover and you are never to experience a second heartburn for being passed on for a promotion opportunity in your corporation.

1. I wish this book had been written 30 years ago and I wish it had been required reading for all of my peers. We all would have wasted less time, made more progress, learned more and had more fun.

2. Companies can’t navigate rapid change while drinking their own cool aid, fortunately, Corporate Awesome Sauce is the antidote for companies who are drunk on their own cool aid.

3. This book is like a compassionate kick in the butt to the benefit of anyone who has wasted time in meetings or bored people with spread sheets and Power Points, which means pretty much everyone in corporate America. Mr Etwaru, like a true friend, is vulnerable enough to show his own weakness and honest enough to help us see our own.

Great digital control systems book!

This book did an excellent job of putting into easily readable language what might be rather difficult to study otherwise. I enjoyed it's coverage on Luenberger Observers, simple digital control system analysis, and Optimal control. The problems weren't so complex that the basic educational goals were lost. After getting through 80% of the book in a classroom setting, I felt that I could continue on with the rest of the material (Kalman Observers, etc.) via self-study.

About the Author
Emma Azalia Smith Hackley was an African American singer and Denver political activist born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1867. Her parents, business owners Henry and Corilla Smith, moved to Detroit where she attended Washington Normal School, graduating in 1886. Smith, a child prodigy learned to play the piano at three and later took private voice, violin and French lessons. Emma Smith worked as an elementary school teacher for eighteen years. During that period she met and married Edwin Henry Hackley a Denver attorney and editor of the city’s black newspaper, the Denver Statesman. In 1900 Hackley received her music degree from Denver University. In 1905-1906 she studied voice in Paris with former Metropolitan Opera star Jean de Reszke. Hackley was active in black Denver’s civic and social life. She founded the Colored Women’s League and served as executive director of its local branch. She and her husband also founded the Imperial Order of Libyans which fought racial discrimination and promoted patriotism among African Americans. .

Horrible Copy!

I wish I could give this book zero stars. I give it one star because the print is completely unreadable and illegible. It's like a bad fax or a photocopy of a bad fax, or maybe a crayon rubbing; it's awful. I don't know where the publishers got this one from, but you'd think they'd have done a better job with this one. I realize this book is very old, but so are many others. Bisher gab es zur Biografiearbeit entweder sozialpädagogische, psychologische, philosophische, linguistische etc. Fachliteratur(en) oder – mehr oder weniger - reine Methodensammlungen. Für Einsteiger und reflektierende Praktiker bedeutete dies bisher ein oft mühsames Suchen, Sammeln und Sichten. Insofern kann die Dankbarkeit und Wertschätzung für die beiden Autoren nicht groß genug ausfallen: Sie schaffen es mit beeindruckender Leichtigkeit, die Essenz der wichtigsten aktuellen Fachdiskurse zur ressourcenorientierten Biografiearbeit kompetent aufzubereiten und klar darzustellen. Mehr als 50 Methoden illustrieren beispielhaft das Zusammenspiel von Theorie und Praxis – und das alles auf insgesamt nur knapp 200 Seiten. Zum Schluss des Buches wird, fast wie nebenbei, auch endlich ein Vorschlag für ein lange fehlendes Kompetenzraster für Biografiearbeiter und Anleiter beigefügt. Beeindruckend! Für mich ist das Buch derzeit „das“ Grundlagenwerk, das jede(r) an ressourcenorientierter Biografiearbeit Interessierte gelesen haben sollte.

Ein Buch das sehr gut für in dieses Thema einführt, aber auch anregt und unterstütz sichmit der eigenen Biografie auseinanderzusetzen.

Im September 2017 erschien im Don Bosco Verlag das Buch „Biografiearbeit als Schatzsuche. Grundlagen und Methoden“ von Erika Ramsauer und Hubert Klingenberger. Es erfasst mit gut 200 Seiten die grundlegenden Prinzipien der Biografiearbeit. Leicht verständlich werden alle wichtigen Bereiche der Biografiearbeit dargestellt. Am Ende jeden Kapitels gibt es weiterführende Literatur sowie die im Fließtext angekündigten Methoden. Da Biografiearbeit von Methoden lebt, hätte ich es als hilfreich erachtet, den jeweiligen Methodenblock im Inhaltsverzeichnis extra aufzuführen. Ich habe mir die Seitenzahlen herausgesucht und dies für mich ergänzt.Ramsauer und Klingenberger sprechen an, was auch mir wichtig an der Biografiearbeit ist: Sie ist die Haltung, mit der wir auf Leben und Lebensgeschichte blicken. Für diejenigen, die über die „Haltungsfrage“ und angeleiteten Methoden hinaus wollen, bietet das Büchlein den wissenschaftlichen Bezug und stellt entsprechende Theorien aus anderen Fachgebieten vor. Weitere Kapitel widmen sich den Grundlagen, der biografischen Kommunikation und herausfordernden Themen. Ich selber bewege mich schon länger in der Biografiearbeit. Ich setze sie, wann immer möglich, ein. Mit diesem Buch ist den Autor*innen sowie dem Verlag ein handliches und kompaktes Buch gelungen, das alle Grundlagen vereint, die zur Biografiearbeit gehören. Das Buch eignet sich besonders für diejenigen, die schon Erfahrungen mit Biografiearbeit gemacht haben. Neueinsteigerinnen und -einsteigern gibt es einen guten Überblick, ich empfehle jedoch, Workshops und Seminare zu besuchen. Denn: „Biografiearbeit kann man nicht erklären, die muss man erleben.“ Außerdem tut Biografiearbeit immer gut.

„Jedes Mal, wenn man ein Buch öffnet, lernt man etwas“ sagt ein chinesisches Sprichwort.Mit diesem Buch ist das der Fall. Es ist eine wahre Schatzkiste gefüllt mit Theorien, Hintergrundwissen und Methoden. Die übersichtliche Gestaltung und die vielen Hinweise auf weiterführende Literatur zu den jeweiligen Themen sind äußerst hilfreich. Besonders spricht mich an, dass jedes Kapitel mit einem passenden Zitat beginnt und die jeweiligen Ziele sowie der Nutzen zusammengefasst sind. Dazu sind dann noch die Methoden den einzelnen Themen zugeordnet und es gibt jede Menge Grafiken, die die Theorie visualisieren. Komplexe Inhalte sind verständlich geschrieben und die Methoden durchwegs mit wenig Aufwand in verschiedenen Kontexten gut anwendbar. Sehr empfehlenswert!

I thought it was supposed to be new, You can see bends and folds in it along with greasy finger prints all over the back cover. You can also see discoloration, yellowing on the inside. It appears to be used.

Good help for classroom discipline

I have read most of this book since I received it about two weeks ago. I thought the principles presented were very good and it would be worth while to implement them--IF I were a classroom teacher. I have a tape of a lecture by Jane Nelsen and thought the book would help me with a problem I have been having in keeping order in a meeting with children from my church. One important principle was the use of "class meetings" which is impractical for my purposes. I am continuing to use her other ideas, as tapping into their innate wisdom and asking them to help solve problems; this is a matter of respect and improves cooperation.

Tool for Teachers

Imagine a classroom where students are learning to solve their own problems and to control and manage their own behavior (so you don't have to). A classroom where an atmosphere of mutual respect and open communication brings everyone together in a way that benefits everyone. A community where encouragement (NOT praise) builds up and brings out the best in every member. Students will grow in social skills and academics. Positive Discipline gives you workable strategies to implement that can bring this picture to reality. I highly recommend it for every teacher, parent and childcare worker.

What I got out of this book was looking at discipline in a positive way and not as punishment. What I don't like is the very negative comments regarding teachers. I think this method is more suited to parenting.

Wir haben das Buch einem Kollegen zum 50er geschenkt. Er hat sich sehr gefreut und hat beim Durchblättern in Nostalgie geschwelgt.

Bei dem hier vorliegenden Buch Wir vom Jahrgang 1968 - Kindheit und Jugend in Österreich" handelt es sich um ein Geschenkebuch aus dem Wartberg Verlag. Die Autorin Angelika Diem beschreibt dort das Leben, die wichtigsten Ereignisse und Geschehennisse aus den Jahren 1968 bis 1986. Man erfährt wer damals als prominent galt, was geschichtlich, politisch und kulturell so alles angesagt war und bekommt dank der zahlreichen Fotos (z. Tl. aus dem Privatfundus der Autorin) und Werbeanzeigen von damals einen guten Hintergrund wie das Leben zu der Zeit wohl gewesen sein mag.Der junge Leser kann durch diese Buch in eine frühere Zeit abtauchen und erfahren, was zu der Zeit als Mama" und Papa" noch jung waren so los war. Man kann z.B. sehen, wie die Mode damals aussah, wie weit die Technik war oder auch was den Menschen damals wichtig war. Beim Lesen kam mir der Gedanke, daß vieles zur der Zeit wohl noch einfacher gewesen sein mag als heute. Damals war noch nicht alles so vertechnikt". Die Kinder konnten noch Kind sein, auch wenn die Zeit vielleicht manchmal härter gewesen sein mag und man sich nicht immer alles leisten konnte, so war man damals glaube ich auch in vieler Hinsicht befreiter und glücklicher.Besonders interessant fand ich, wie es damals so in den Schulen zuging oder welche Kinderserien im Narrnkastl" sprich Fernseher angesagt waren. Eigentlich dasselbe was auch ich geschaut habe, Biene Maja und Co. Beim Lesen entdeckte ich sehr viele Parallelen aus meiner eigenen Kindheit wieder und bin überrascht, welche Kindheitserinnerungen mir mit dem Anblick der Bilder wieder einfallen. Ich denke gerade für Menschen, die in diesen Jahrgängen selbst Kind waren und zu der Zeit aufgewachsen sind birgt gerade dieses Buch einen großen Reichtum an Erinnerungsanreizen. Man lehnt sich während des Lesens oftmals zurück und erinnert sich an die eigenen Erlebnisse damals.Die Buchreihe umfasst auch zwei Bücher zu Deutschland und der ehemaligen DDR, ebenfalls zu den gleichen Jahrgängen. Es ist ein tolles Geschenk für alle die gern einmal die 60er und 70er Revue passieren lassen wollen und sich an ihre Kindheit/Jugend etc. erinnern möchten. Aber es eignet sich auch als Geschenk für die Kinder oder gar Enkelkinder, um diesen zu zeigen, was das Leben damals so alles zu bieten hatte. Viele Kinder können sich ein Leben ohne Nintendo, Wii und Xbox ja kaum noch vorstellen.Vielen Dank Frau Diem für die tolle Entführung in eine Zeit als ich noch klein war und die tollen Erinnerungen!

Ein im Wartberg Verlag veröffentlichtes Buch, welches sich hervorragend als Geschenkbuch macht, thematisiert die Kindheit und Jugend der 68er. In diesem Geburtsjahr ging es nämlich in Österreich hoch her. Die Kinder tobten noch in der Natur und verbrachten ihre Tage im Wald, Feld oder Garten. Als Windeln mussten quadratische Baumwolltücher herhalten. Im Fernseher liefen Biene Maja, die Sesamstraße und die Muppet Show. Der erste erfolgreiche Heimcomputer fand langsam Einzug in die Wohnzimmer und der Walkman mit den Hörspielkasetten immer mehr Begeisterte und Nutzer. Dauerwellen und Punkfrisuren waren hoch Trend und symbolisierten die Revolution der Teenies.In fünf Kapiteln werden die Jahre von 1968 bis 1986 und die damaligen Geschehnisse und Entwicklungen rückblickend betrachtet und anhand von vielen Fotografien verbildlicht. Es macht Spaß die schicken Kurzmäntel der Mütter und die altmodischen und heute ja schon fast kultigen Kinderwagen in Erinnerung zu rufen. Die Männer in Schlaghosen und von Elvis Presley inspirierten Frisuren entlocken einem beim Betrachten ein Schmunzeln. Das Schwelgen in vergangenen Erinnerungen bereitet viel Vergnügen und man wünscht sich dieses Buch hätte doch ein paar zusätzliche Seiten.Diese Buchreihe gibt es ebenso für Deutschland (für die Jahrgänge 1922 bis 1989) und die ehemalige DDR (für die Jahrgänge 1935 bis 1979). Ein tolles Geschenkbuch!

Roth in transition

The Counterlife is one of Roth's most unusual and experimental novels, and finds Roth in transition from the spare, elegant books of the Zuckerman Bound trilogy to the more expansive Zuckerman novels of his recent, acclaimed "America" trilogy (American Pastoral, I Married a Communist, and The Human Stain).

In The Counterlife we get the full range of Roth--from the moving but wickedly funny first part Basel, where Nathan Zuckerman narrates the events leading to his brother Henry's death and subsequent funeral, to the second section Judea, where Nathan goes to Israel to try to lure Henry (restored to life and now part of a militant Zionist group) back home to the States, to a later section where Nathan has died, and an estranged Henry attends his funeral, to the final sections with Nathan in England, dealing with anti-Semitism and his wife's family in a brilliant bit of social comedy.

Plot sounds confusing, right? Yet The Counterlife is not a wildly post-modern novel, but a fairly straightforward read. Not all parts of the book work as effectively as the others, and the book is less finished than some of Roth's other work, but there are stretches here that contain some of the best writing Roth has ever done. This is a book deeply concerned with questions of identity and free will--more specifically about the many lives we create for ourselves and the way we often form these lives by reacting with or against other people's conceptions of us.

It's a remarkably thought-provoking and absorbing novel; if I would withhold it from the very top tier of Roth's achievements it's only because it lacks the cohesion and concentration of his best work. Still, a deeply rewarding book, and a must-read for Roth fans.

Roth's "Variations On a Theme"

This is the best novel I have read by Philip Roth (so far). It is unlike anything I have read by him before, or by many others, for that matter. When I finished it, I was reminded of a number of musical compositions called "Variations On a Theme By xxxxx), in which a composer takes a theme by another composer and then composes several variations on that theme. Here, however, the original theme is by Roth himself, so that Roth is writing variations on his own theme.

I don't like people who write reviews with spoilers, so I won't do that here, in that I won't reveal any crucial plot elements. However, I don't believe it would ruin any prospective reader's enjoyment to reveal the book's basic structure. The book is divided into 5 sections. In the first, a major event occurs to one of the characters. In the second, the tape is rewound and that same character's life takes another course. In the third and, in my opinion, the most expendable part of the book, which follows directly from the second section, an unsettling event happens to one of the other main characters. In the fourth, the tape is rewound once again and the same thing that happened to one of the characters in the first section happens to one of the other characters. The fifth section follows directly from the second without the events in the third section having happened. Moreover, in this section one of the characters becomes aware that she is a character in a novel and begins talking back to the author.

Confused? I wouldn't blame you if you were. However, the book does come together with remarkable coherence at the end because it deals with several universal human themes. I think all human beings have "what ifs?" in their lives. Haven't all of us wondered at time what our lives would have been like if such and such hadn't happened. Roth shows us several different scenarios as to how things might have turned out for his characters. Another major theme is Jewish identity: how does a Jew fit into a society where he is a minority and perhaps an outsider? Or, does he reject that society and go to Israel, where Jews run the show? How does a gentile who is in no way anti-Semitic manage a relationship with a Jew she loves but who is also full of anger at the history of anti-Semitism? Finally, what is real and what isn't? What is the difference between fiction and reality? This is not an original theme, to be sure, but rather handles it with exceptional skill and finesse.

Finally, I must comment on Roth's prose style. Roth writes the clearest and most lucid prose of any modern American writer, with the possible exception of John Updike. Reading Roth is nearly effortless. What may be difficult and may cause the reader to pause are the ideas he discusses, but never the prose style. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as a riveting and talented read.
