This summer's must read

Full disclosure, I worked with Frank, BUT I did not "know" Frank. This is one of the best autobiographies I have read in my life.
Frank is brutally honest, holding nothing back. He takes you on a journey that you will most likely want to stop; but don't. Frank lives a daily struggle against his addictions and his book gives you an idea of what it is like to be an addict. Frank's book is for everyone because it is full of short stories; some will make you laugh, some will make you uncomfortable, and some will make you cry, but they are all real. There is a very good chance when you finish your journey with Frank, you will come out a different person.

This is a very well-written story about a man and his struggles with a demon that has haunted him most of his adult life. The format is such that there is something for everyone. I have dealt with people that were addicted to alcohol and this would’ve been a wonderful tool to have had. He tells some fantastic stories; some will make you laugh, some will make you cringe, and some will make you cry. Join Frank on his journey to sobriety. It’s well worth the time!

This book is a page turner! I met frank before i ever knew about this book, but i am greatful to have read it! If you think you are an alcoholic, you are an alcoholic, or living with someone who may be an alcoholic you must read this book. Even if you have no affiliation to an alcholic you should read this book. The message within this book is a poweful one, and if you are an alcoholic or an addict like myself, this book will help you on your journey to recovery.

Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote twenty-four fast-paced, hardboiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. Using the same nom de plume, Westlake also completed a separate series in the Parker universe, starring Alan Grofield, an occasional colleague of Parker. While he shares events and characters with several Parker novels, Grofield is less calculating and more hot-blooded than Parker; think fewer guns, more dames.

The third Grofield novel, The Blackbird shares its first chapter with Slayground: after a traumatic car crash, Parker eludes the police, but Grofield gets caught. Lying injured in the hospital, Grofield is visited by G-Men who offer him an alternative to jail, and he finds himself forced into a deadly situation involving international criminals and a political conspiracy.



With a new foreword by Sarah Weinman that situates the Grofield series within Westlake’s work as a whole, this novel is an exciting addition to any crime fiction fan’s library.

Richard Stark was one of the many pseudonyms of Donald E. Westlake (1933–2008), a prolific author of crime fiction. In 1993, the Mystery Writers of America bestowed the society’s highest honor on Westlake, naming him a Grand Master.

Grofield, Alan Grofield - Shaken Not Stirred

"The Blackbird" continues Richard Stark's (AKA Donald Westlake) desire to spread out the genre umbrella a little bit without fundamentally changing his main meal ticket, Parker. Instead he uses the adventures of easy going and likable Alan Grofield to move the Parker-verse in some different directions. In the previous Grofield book, "The Dame," Grofield becomes wrapped up in a classic, locked door parlor mystery, a la Agatha Christie. In "The Damsel" Grofield lives out a rousing action romance. In this one, published in the late 60's, he channels Ian Fleming and sees how Grofield stacks up against James Bond.

As with all the Parker books, we encounter characters we have met before giving Stark new ways to build up these minor characters. After a botched armored car robbery (also chronicled in Slayground which was written first but published later), Grofield is captured and involuntarily put to work by a super secret arm of the government in exchange for his freedom. Grofield would much rather escape, but is unable to do so under the thumb of relentless secret agents. Why is Grofield the man for the job? Simple. He has a close relationship with several of the subjects of interest, all of whom we know from previous Grofield stories.

Without giving too much of the plot away, Grofield becomes involved in a classic Bondian adventure with all the accompanying danger, hot chicks and world-wide disaster implications. The story is far more like Bond cinema than Bond books. Unlike Bond who always worked for Queen and Country, Grofield is only looking out for himself. As his involvement in the international plot becomes more tangled the two motivations, country and self, intersect.

There is a substantial maturing of Grofield in this novel, especially from when we first meet him in "The Score." Although he remains his charismatic self throughout the novel, he does several very cold things which would force even Parker (and Bond) to raise an eyebrow. The novel is fast paced and a very quick read. I haven't found a Parker-verse book I haven't liked yet (I'm reading through them chronologically) and this one though radically different from what I've come to expect, is still a great read.

It seems almost anything Donald Westlake writes is a pure joy to read. This one was no exception.
In fact, I've even re-read some of his novels several times when I gave up in getting another good
author. Not only is a good man hard to find, so is an author.

Grofield does Bond, Westlake blows Stark's cover

Chapter one of The Blackbird is similar to chapter one of Slayground: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels)- the same heist told from Grofield's point-of-view. Grofield is a professional, but he is not like Parker, as soon becomes apparent:

"You've got a small army here, you don't need me. What your problem is, you don't want the rest of the team to know one of their number's been bumped off. You get little morale problems like that often?"
"I hope you screw up, Grofield," Ken said. "I hope you screw up so bad I get the order to take you right back and turn you in for that armored car job."
"And let the Third World capture Peoria? Move over, Ken, I'm off to save my country from the pygmies."
Ken moved over. "You cynical b*stard," he said.
Grofield stopped with his hand on the knob. "If I don't come back from this mission," he said dramatically, "I want you to tell the folks back home. Tell them to be on their guard. Tell them to--tell them to--watch the skies!" He went out chuckling, and Ken slammed the door behind him.

This Richard Stark is not in the 'quartet' form- there is no shift in the middle to other points of view. It is a very creditable parody or pastiche of a Bond adventure, with a stark twist in one chapter (nobody does it better), and Westlake's dry humor on display quite often. He seems willing in this outting to blow 'Stark's' cover:

... He sat up, stiff and aching and bruised all over. He called, "Vivian?"
Somebody groaned. He got to hands and knees.
"Groan again," he called.
She groaned again. He crawled in that direction, and touched wet cloth. He slid his hand along the cloth and said, "Vivian?"
A weak voice said, "Watch that hand, there."
"Why? What have I got?"
"So far, leg."
He patted it. "You sound like you're all right," he said.

Ich bin wirklich positiv überrascht. Das ist ein gelungener psychologischer Thriller der ganz besonderen Art. Das Buch besticht durch seine geheimnisvolle Grundstimmung und seiner subtilen Spannung. Die Geschichte baut sich gemächlich auf, anfangs mit einem nur sehr langsamen Spannungsbogen. Und trotzdem wird die Geschichte erstaunlicherweise überhaupt nicht langweilig.Dem Autor ist ein fesselnder Thriller/Psychodrama gelungen, der mich vorallem durch seine realistisch dargestellten Charaktere und der genialen Wendung zum Schluss absolut überzeugen konnte. Das Buch wird aus der Sichtweise von dem Psychiater Theo Faber geschildert. Zwischendurch erfährt der Leser (durch Tagebucheinträgen) auch einiges über die stumme Patientin Alicia Berenson. Seine bildhafte Schreibweise/Übersetzung hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Dieser Psychothriller ist spannend aufgebaut, nicht vorhersehbar und psychologisch sehr gut durchdacht.Alex Michaelides hat hier einen außergewöhnlichen, interessanten und fesselnden Psychothriller geschrieben, der auch ohne viel Blutvergießen absolut fesselt. Mich konnte die Geschichte von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite sehr gut unterhalten.

Ich habe den Roman an einem langen Abend gelesen; er liest sich leicht. Zu Beginn hat mich die Geschichte sehr interessiert und ich war gespannt. Doch etwa auf der Hälfte war mir klar, worauf es hinauslief. Da ich nicht spoilern möchte nur so viel: Von einem tollen Turn kann keine Rede sein, sondern der Auto ist den einfachsten Weg gegangen. Ich finde das Buch ist inhaltlich auch recht dünn, eher wie ein Drehbuch - als Film könnte ich mir die Geschichte ganz gut vorstellen.

Mir hat das Buch extrem gut gefallen! Der Wechsel zwischen Tagebucheinträgen und der 'Gegenwart' (bzw dann doch nicht, wie man erst am Ende versteht) war sehr angenehm! Klar, es gab keinen actiongeladenen Spannungshöhepunkt, aber dass man so auf die falsche Fährt geführt wurde, fand ich super! Ich hab es innerhalb von 2 Tagen verschlungen, und kann kaum erwarten, dass Herr Michaelides das nächste Buch raus bringt!

Das Buch vermochte erst nicht, mich so richtig zu fesseln. Aber aufgrund der positiven Rezensionen mit den Andeutungen auf ein überraschendes Ende war ich neugierig geworden. Und ich habe es nicht bereut. So hatte ich den Ausgang wirklich nicht erwartet. Aber irgendwie erinnert mich der Plot an ein Werk von Fitzek, deshalb nur 4 Sterne.

Ich fand die Story an sich eigentlich gut und der Schreibstil hat mir auch gut gefallen - es las sich schön flüssig und hatte kurze knackige Kapitel, darin seh ich dann aber auch das Negative an diesem Buch - Denn zum Ende hin, als dann die große Enthüllung bevorstand, wurde das Buch nur noch lahm abgearbeitet (alà : Ich muss jetzt zum Ende kommen!) - die Kapitel wurden immer kürzer und die Endhüllung des "Bösewichts“ ging dann genau über 2 Seiten! Wo ich dann leider nicht den gewünschten WTF-Moment bekam, leider...eher ein laues Lüftchen!Ich weiss nich was den Autor dazu getrieben hat, das Ende dieser durchaus guten Gewchichte so derart belanglos dahinzuschmieren?! Ich hätte mir das Ende gern ausgefeilter gewünscht und hätte auch 100 Seiten mehr in Kauf genommen - schade!Leider nur 2 Sterne!1 Stern für die Idee1 Stern für den Schreibstil

Alles ist mit einem realiven Halbwissen über Psyologie und leider dazu aus einer absolut heteronormen Perspektive geschrieben, wirkt oft an den Haaren herbei gezogen und die Wendungen, alles was "überraschend" wirken soll wirkt zu unnatürlich um wirklich überraschend zu sein. Das Ende ist das schlimmste, die "Auflösung" eröffnet eine Menge Lücken im Verlauf der Geschichte. Meines Erachtens nach Zeitverschwendung.

Ob die psychologischen Aspekte stimmig sind, kann ich nicht beurteilen. Mir erscheinen sie zuweilen etwas klischeehaft. Die Geschichte entwickelt sich recht spannend und da man natürlich die Rezensionen gelesen hat, fiebert man der "völlig unerwarteten" Aufklärung entgegen, die dann aber doch Recht enttäuschend ausfällt und mehr dem verzweifelten Versuch des Autors zu entspringen scheint, noch unbedingt einen Plot-Twist vom Zaune zu brechen. Und damit es auch jeder kapiert, begeht der Autor noch den Kardinalfehler, das ganze erklären zu wollen. Den Sieg der Gerechtigkeit am Ende hätte er sich auch sparen sollen.Fazit: Spannende Unterhaltung mit zu langem Finale, das mit der Brechstange überraschen will.

Das Buch ist so hammermäßig gut; ich war bis zum Ende hin total gefesselt. Über das Ende will ich gar nicht viel verraten, außer, dass es komplett unerwartet war. Ich empfehle jedem, der Psychothriller liebt, das Buch zu kaufen. Es ist seinen Preis wert.

Different teachings and approaches that have changed my consciousness and resonated with my soul

I have been a New Thought student and teacher for almost three decades. A variety of authors and books have contributed to my continuosely evolving consciousness. Arnold Patent and his "groundbreaking" approach to Universal Principles; their action in our physical lives; the nature of our Oneness with God and all of the Universe; our Perfect Soul Self and it's creation of and purpose for our human experience resonated with my soul and challenged many of my previous New Thought teachings. He is strait forward and clearly explains and supports his beliefs. He provides simple but profound and effective exercises to recognize our natural, true God Power which has been hidden in our physical experience and can now be released through embracing and loving our physical and emotional discomfort and pain. I highly recommend for those seeking different teachings and approaches which explain our human experience and it's relationship to our God Self. I also recommend you first read the 2007 revised edition of his original book, You Can Have It All.

We All Need the Wise Woman in Our Lives

My sister-in-law recently told me about George MacDonald, the author of this book--a Scottish author born in the mid 1850's. His writings influenced authors such as C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. I really enjoyed reading many of the works of C.S. Lewis, so upon learning about MacDonald, I was curious but felt maybe his fairy tales wouldn't be to my liking. Nevertheless, I respected my relative's recommendation, bought this title and soon found myself deeply enjoying the stories. It was easy reading and contained wonderful life lessons valuable down through the ages. I think it is suitable for young and old alike. I felt very satisfied when I finished reading it and wondered why hadn't I known about this author before!!

Pathetically sloppy printing job

I do not hate the book itself, but rather the slovenly binding and printing job. It seems the publisher took an old print copy, photocopied it, and slapped it into a magazine-like format. It's pretty ugly and troubled by typos, random hyphens​, and other signs of not caring.

Great read, full of fantasy and life lessons

I really enjoyed this book! I read it in about two- three days. It is short but a fantastic allegory that has. I am a Mom of three and think this fable has as many lessons for parents as it does for children. I love the imagery as I could completely play this book as a movie in my mind as I read it. Each scene was set with the perfect amount of detail to create the imagery, without becoming to long winded or boring. It may even be a book I would go back to and read again.

I have never read any of George MacDonald and accidentally stumbled onto this story.

This book will challenge you to think outside the box and get your "creative juices" flowing!

The book have exercises that challenge you in new ways to use your sketchbook as a designer. I would always just sketch designs in my sketchbook and wouldn't think to use it for the many ideas listed in the book. I also would never completely fill my sketchbook. I would recommend this book to any aspiring fashion designer who is kind of new at using their sketchbook and don't know where to start in it. After reading this book you will get over the fear of messing up the clean white pages in your sketchbook. I do warn that if you expect for there to be material that teaches you how to sketch designs that this is not the book. I would recommend Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling for that matter. Other than that, this book is a great buy.

Love this book!~ It takes a fresh and inventive approach to using the sketchbook as a design tool.

Truly wish that this was used as a text for fashion design classes. Many of the current texts are stale and uninspiring. This book gets you thinking outside the mundane.

Note that another reviewer said this won't teach you to illustrate -- disagree a bit on that -- one example is the "inkblot" exercise -- easily applied to illustration. Moreover, the author is a fashion illustrator so his sketchbook ideas are are informed by that discipline.

Plan to do all of the exercises in this book to shake loose the cobwebs!

I love it. It has exercises and explanation. You won't regret. The most useful book that I have ever bought!!!!! It isn't book like bla-bla-bla...you must have a good Idea to create, it teaches you how make that idea first!!

For the undergrad college student and interested researcher

This book is designed to be the standard undergraduate text for a traditional course in engineering. A one semester course would likely use chapters 1-5. For classes with an emphasis on aerospace engineering, aerodynamics is covered in Chapter six.

This book, more than most, includes a lot of commentary on real world situations that both keep interest level up and which indicate some of the types of applications which the student may find himself studying in post-college life. This includes some quite interesting commentary on fluid flow in biological systems including the human lung and wings of insects and birds, studies on the air flow around large trucks, and numerous photos and comments on strangely shaped aircraft studied by NASA and others.

At this time the photo of the book cover on the Amazon description is not correct. Perhaps they used a photo of an earlier edition. Also the publication date of the current edition is given by the publisher as 2011.

Nebula Award winner ESTHER FRIESNER is the author of more than 30 novels and over 150 short stories, including the story "Thunderbolt" in Random House's Young Warriors anthology, which lead to the creation of Nobody's Princess and Nobody's Prize. She is also the editor of seven popular anthologies. Her works have been published around the world. SunriseSunlight touched the western shore of the sacred river. I sat hugging Nava as we watched the beautiful return of light to the world. The nightmare that had disturbed my sleep on that first night of our escape from Thebes was gone. In my heart, I praised Ra, who had triumphed once more over the monsters of the underworld to steer his sun-ship safely back across the open sky.“Are you all right?” Nava asked, gazing at me with a worried look that was much too old for such a little girl. “You were making a lot of noise. You must have had a very scary dream.”“It was scary,” I replied, brushing a few stands of hair out of her eyes. “But it wasn’t all bad.”“I heard you yell the evil prince’s name.” Nava pursed her lips, her small body radiating anger. She knew what Thutmose had done to me—condemned me for blasphemy, imprisoned me, tried to have me killed—and that he was the reason we’d fled Thebes last night. “A dream he’s in has to be all bad!”“Not if I fought him”—I smiled—“and won.”She tilted her head. “Did you?”“I certainly did. First he tried to fool me; then he tried to harm me, but I defeated him. And do you know why I could do that?” Nava shook her head. “Because I wasn’t just fighting to save myself. You were in my dream as well, Nava, and I fought for you.”“Oh, I know I was there,” she said, lifting her chin. “I heard you call my name, too. Did I help you?”“In a way.”“Hmph. That means I didn’t do anything, really.”“Maybe next time I’ll have a dream where we fight together,” I said. “And isn’t it better to know that I can depend on your help when I’m awake?”Nava wasn’t satisfied. “I want to help you always. At least you dreamed that you won. I’m glad. That means we’ll be safe, no matter what. Dreams don’t lie, not the really important ones.”“So now you’re a dream-reader as well as a musician, Nava?” I teased her gently, the way I sometimes teased my little sister Bit-Bit. How I missed her!Nava shook her head. “I wish I were. Dream-readers—even those who are slaves—can become very rich and important. Before she died, my mama used to tell us about one of our people, a Habiru slave who was a great dream-reader, long ago. He read Pharaoh’s dreams so well that he was given his freedom, and gold, and a big house, and a princess!”“Those must have been very important dreams,” I said lightly.“Oh, they were!” I was treating Nava’s tale as no more than a child’s fancy, but she was completely sincere. She believed in every word she told me. “Mama told us that those dreams saved the Black Land from a famine that lasted seven years.”A wistful look came into her eyes. It was the first time I’d heard Nava talk about her mother.I patted her shoulder. “Your mother knew very good stories, Nava. I hope you’ll tell me more of them someday.”“It’s not a story,” she said, giving me a determined look. “It’s the truth.”“What’s the truth?” a sleepy voice called out weakly from the far side of our dead campfire. With groans and moans, Prince Amenophis pushed himself up to sit cross-legged on the harsh ground. “Horus spare me, but my arms and legs feel ready to break before they bend normally again,” he muttered. “Ugh, what a night. Amun grant we don’t have to spend too many more like it before we reach Dendera.”“How far is it from here?” I asked.Amenophis shrugged his bony shoulders. “A few days.”“How many?” I pressed. I was concerned, for his sake. After only one night away from the comforts of Thebes, he was starting to look haggard. The fewer days we’d have to travel, the better for him.It was an innocent question, but it seemed to make Amenophis surprisingly uncomfortable. “I—I’m not sure. I’ve always been brought there in one of the royal ships. It was very pleasant, sailing down the sacred river, so I never paid much attention to how long the journey took.”“Royal ships with oars and sails,” I remarked. “They’d go much faster than our little papyrus boat, but it’ll get us there all the same.”“Is Dendera the only city we’ll pass?” Nava asked.“Y-yes. I mean, I’m not sure about that, either. The last time I traveled there, I was much younger. Even though I wasn’t a child anymore, Mother kept sending me into the cabin for most of the trip. I think she was afraid I’d fall into the river if I wandered around the deck. Thutmose made fun of me, called me a little lotus petal.”“He’s the lotus petal,” Nava decreed. “Not brave like us. He’d never leave the palace to help his friends.” She hugged me.“Maybe not,” I said. “But he will leave the palace to come after me. If we don’t know how many days’ sail we’ve got ahead of us, we’d better start as soon as possible, to put plenty of distance between us and him.”“Do we have to go right now?” Nava asked plaintively. “I’m hungry.”I tousled her thick hair fondly. “Of course we’ll have breakfast first. We’ll just have it as quickly as possible.” I stood up and shook dust from my dress. The cloth was already much the worse for a night spent sleeping on the ground. I hoped it would hold together until Dendera. Clapping my hands, I turned to Amenophis and said, “Which bag shall I open for us? Where’s the bread packed?”My friend began to chew on his lower lip nervously. His eyes darted to the bags of provisions he’d carried ashore from the humble boat that had ferried us across the sacred river. I watched his fingers curl and uncurl as he silently tallied the sacks, and I saw worry creep into his eyes. “That . . . that one has bread in it, I think,” he said, pointing unsteadily at one of the smaller bags. “Just take two pieces—four if they’re small. None for me, please. I’m . . . I’m not hungry.”I opened the bag he indicated and took out two substantial loaves, round and golden brown. They were fresh enough to still be soft, though the rest of the bread we’d brought would soon turn so hard it would need to be soaked in water or beer before we could chew it. I gave one loaf to Nava, who sank her small white teeth into it greedily; then I tore the other loaf in half.“Hungry or not, you’ll share this with me,” I said.“No, really, I don’t want it.” He turned his face away, but I’d seen the longing in his eyes when he’d looked at the loaf. I could almost hear his stomach rumbling with early morning hunger. If he wasn’t famished, I was a frog.“Then I don’t want it, either.”“But you have to eat! You’ll get sick if you don’t.”I thrust the bread at him again. “And you won’t?” Still he refused to accept it. For much of the book, Nefertiti remains isolated, even heartbroken. Still, she manages to gather strength for herself and to instill strength in others.
