About the Author
Sherri Messersmith has been teaching at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, since 1994. She has over 25 years of experience teaching many different courses from developmental mathematics through calculus. She earned a bachelor of science degree in the teaching of mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and went on to teach at the high level for two years. Sherri returned to UIUC and earned a master of science in applied mathematics and stayed on at the university to teach and coordinate large sections of undergraduate math courses. Sherri has authored several textbook, and she has also appeared in videos accompanying several McGraw-Hill texts. Sherri lives outside of Chicago with her husband, Phil, and their daughters, Alex and Cailen. In her precious free time, she likes to read, play the guitar, and travel -- the manuscripts for this and her previous books have accompanied her from Spain to Greece and many points in between.

About the Author
Now retired, Glenn Walker worked for twenty-eight years as a statistician in clinical trials and health-related research. He has worked as an independent consultant for clinical researchers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, including numerous CROs. A SAS user since 1976, Glenn received his PhD in statistics from the University of Florida, where, as a graduate student, he taught courses in statistics and on how to use SAS software. Jack Shostak is the associate director of statistics for the Duke Clinical Research Institute, where he oversees a team of statistical programmers and serves as a CDISC resource. A SAS user since 1985, he is the author of SAS Programming in the Pharmaceutical Industry, also published by SAS Press. Jack received his MBA from James Madison University. He is active in the Pharmaceutical Industry SAS Users Group (PharmaSUG) and SAS Global Forum.

The perfect place to start

The 3rd edition of this book is as excellent as the first two. It covers the same core set of common analyses as the second edition but this one adds in more graphics, better coverage of repeated measures, it uses mixed effects models instead of older repeated measures ANOVA methods(don't worry if you don't know what that means), there is a bit about power calculations and throughout the book the code has been updated with modern syntax and new language features. The information on the new diagnostics associated with many of the old procedures is extremely valuable.

I highly recommend this for students or doctors who want to get their hands into the guts of SAS analysis code. What it lacks in statistical rigor and proofs it more than makes up for with easy to read instruction and well annotated code examples.

*** My review of the 2nd edition ***
I have been teaching biostatistics and data management for many years and on the first day of the year I always tell incoming MDs, masters and PhD level students who are not mathematicians to go out immediately and get this book. When they graduate, they frequently spontaneously tell me that it was excellent advice and they tell me the book "saved" them either in class or on their projects. I have never heard a complaint about this book and that is REALLY unusual with a statistics book.

Walker writes short chapters centered around common statistical methods. He gives a clean paragraph or two saying why you would use a statistic. Then he writes-up a little math, with the algebra usually worked out. After that the vast majority of the chapters are completed examples with datasets, code and output. The code and output are annotated with notes and numbered labels so you can quickly figure out what each part of the output and code means (in clear English).

If you get stuck in an overly theoretical statistics class get this book and you will be able to actually do the work you need for biostatistics projects that use SAS.

About the Author
Melissa Schwartzberg is an Associate Professor of Politics at New York University. She previously taught at George Washington University and Columbia University. She received her AB from Washington University, St Louis in 1996, and her PhD in 2002 from New York University. She is the author of Democracy and Legal Change (Cambridge, 2007) and of articles in leading journals including the American Political Science Review, the Journal of the History of Ideas, the Journal of Political Philosophy, and Political Theory. She is a 2013 recipient of the Mellon New Directions Fellowship. From 2010 to 2013, she served as the co-president of the Association for Political Theory.

Didn't Make Me Laugh Out Loud As Advertised

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher (via Netgalley).

This short story collection was what a lot of short story collections end up being for me: hit and miss (or, in this case, hit and so-so). It’s like when a Top Chef contestant makes a “duo of lamb, tuna, whatever” and the judges ding him/her because one half of the duo was great, but the other was merely average. So, the overall dish doesn’t work. I kind of expected to laugh out loud throughout this book and to encounter “yes, that’s exactly how it is” writing, but that really didn’t happen much. There were paragraphs here and there that were funny and spot-on, but few of the stories worked in their entirety for me. The two stories I really enjoyed (“Dumpster Diving with the Stars” and “The Fitter”) were a bit darker and longer than the others, allowing me to invest in the characters. Though this collection wasn’t an overall winner, it did help me clarify what types of short stories are more likely to appeal to me.

funny and shocking and full of the truth about what it is to be a housewife

American Housewife is a collection of humorous stories, some a little bit dark, some a little bizarre, but all will at least make you smirk, if not have you laughing out loud. As an American housewife myself, I saw myself in several of these characters but luckily not in all of them.
My favorite was Pageant Protection, about a woman that saves little girls from their pageant mothers by kidnapping them and setting them up with wealthy Manhattan couples as new parents. If only there was such a person out there, saving those poor little girls! I enjoyed the last story in the book as well and will never look at a box of Tampax the same. American Housewife is a tiny little book that will take you a couple of hours to read, tops, but it will keep you thinking about what it means to be an American housewife.

Short stories about horrible people, behaving horribly.

When I started American Housewife, I had some vague memory of someone somewhere saying it was a memoir and I started reading it with glee because these people were horrid and I love nothing more than reading about horrible, snooty people doing horrible things to each other (and, if true, all the better!) but alas my brain failed me once again. I soon realized it’s actually a fictional collection of short stories, vignettes and “lessons” – mostly sarcastic lessons on how to be a proper southern lady. Lessons I obviously have no use for! None of them are true stories either. Ah well.

I’m not going to rehash all of the stories and such with a plot synopsis because I am lazy and mostly because I did not take notes. So off the top of my head, I’ll tell you a little about the stories that stuck with me long enough to be written down here.

“The Wainscotting War” was the first real short story in the collection and I thought it was the best. It should’ve been stuck somewhere in the middle because I kept expecting the rest of the tales to have the same snarky magic and, except for brief glimpses, they didn’t. It’s about two housewives who go to great lengths to out insult the other in an email war over redecorating a hallway. It’s wickedly dark and funny in the evilest of ways and I LOVED it.

“The Fitter” is about a woman who is married to the most wanted man in all the land. Wanted by the woman-folk, that is. He can look at a woman’s chest and instantly find her the perfect bra, one able to perk up the saddest pair of droopy breasts without surgery. He’s been able to do this since he was a kid which is kind of creepy, if you ask me, but he’s managed to make quite the living off of his magical skills, yet another reason the ladies are all after him. His current wife, also his assistant in the business, has to fend off the hussies vying for his attention. I felt for her, I truly did. It was a little sad but I’m not going to tell you why (unless you send me some chocolate).

“Welcome to Book Club” mostly annoyed me, truth be told. I thought it was trying just a little too hard to be witty and obnoxious and mostly succeeded in just being obnoxious. To be a part of this exclusive “book club” means you must give up your identity and . . . other things. The narration was good but the story didn’t work out for me.

“Dead Doormen” was ghostly, morbid and a little ghastly. That I can work with.

“Dumpster Diving with the Stars” nearly bored me to death. It was about some ridiculous reality tv show. It was overly long and not at all interesting or witty to me. Not helping matters was the monotonous narrator. I never thought it would end but fortunately it did.

Did I mention the stories are read by alternating narrators? That’s a very good thing in this case.

“Pageant Protection” is a twisted little story about a woman who makes it her mission to give pageant girls a lifestyle “do-over”.

“I Sold My Soul to Tampax” is the last story and I don’t think this is the title but it’ll have to do. My brain has shut down for the day. It’s about a writer who apparently didn’t read the fine print on her contract and faces what is probably every writer’s worst nightmare. It was pretty much all over the place and felt a little rushed and the protagonist seemed like a dimwit for allowing any of this to happen at all.

Most of the stories fall into the “entertaining at some point” category with only one that really stood out which is unfortunate seeing as it was the first actual story in the book and set me up to expect the rest to be even better. The others weren’t as nasty as I’d hoped and weren’t really “laugh out loud funny” but maybe my sense of humor has skedaddled off with what’s left of my memory. If you want to read about a bunch of awful ladies that have ugly thoughts, dark edges and haughty ways give it a go. You probably won’t like any of these people but you might like reading about them.
