About the Author
Nancey Green Leigh is a Professor and PhD Program Director in the School of City and Regional Planning Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the American lnstitute of Certified Planners and Co-Editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research. Leigh teaches, conducts research, and publishes in the areas of local economic development planning, urban and regional development, brownfield redevelopment, and sustainable urban industrial systems.She is the author of Stemming Middle Class Decline: The Challenge to Economic Development Planning, and coauthor (with Joan Fitzgerald) of Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb. Some of the journals she has published in are Economic Development Quarterly, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Industrial Ecology, International Regional Science Review, Journal of Resource Conservation and Recycling, Growth and Change, Journal of Urban Technology, IEDC Economic Development Journal, and the Journal of Planning Literature. She obtained her B.A. in urban studies and a master's in regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master's in economics and a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Regents Fellow of the University of California at Berkeley and past Vice President of the Association of The Collegiate Schools of Planning.

Dr. Edward J. Blakely is Professor of Urban Policy in the United States Study Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has held academic positions in teaching, research, academic administration, and economic development policy for more than 30 years, including Dean of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy and Dean of the University of Southern California School of Policy, Planning, and Development. He is a leading scholar and practitioner in the fields of planning and local economic development. Dr. Blakely served as a policy adviser to the mayor of Oakland and adviser to the Los Angeles Public School District. He was appointed by President Clinton as Vice Chair of the Presidio Trust, where he played a key role in the development of the former army base into a profitable civic facility. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Planning Association, the Nature Conservancy, and Fulbright Association. In January 2007, Dr. Blakely was appointed by the Mayor of New Orleans to head the recovery effort following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Great for a reference book. Buy the older addition.

Very clear and concise, yet comprehensive enough to serve as a manual. Of all the books I've read in grad school (economic development/urban planning), this is one of the best and most useful books.

I doubt the "new edition" is any better, though. I would buy the older edition if I had to buy it again, which is significantly cheaper. It said "new content with social network analysis," but there is no index item for social network analysis and I haven't found it yet in the book.

The bible of local economic development planning

This is the bible of local economic development planning. This is the fifth edition. I have read the previous four edition and the information in this edition is worth the cost. I recommend it highly to all practitioners of economic development regardless of their years of practice. It is great information for those new to the profession as well as people like me with decades of experience.

I needed this book for a graduate class, and I will admit we didn't use it for a lot but what I did need it for in Ch. 5 & 6 it was very useful and became my bible for the second half of the semester. If you are working on an economic development plan this book would be a great resource to have.

Ok as an intro, but rather irksome

I had purchased this book as part of the required books for a molecular biology techniques class in college. While I did skim through most of it at that time, I hadn't given it my full attention.

Two years later, I've sat down and read the entire book (spare 2 chapters). My reason for doing this was to brush up on what I (hopefully) already knew, expand on my knowledge, and to catch some things I'd surely completely missed.

I do not like how the chapters are written by different authors. I suppose it makes sense in light of certain folks being experts in their respective fields... but isn't this book an intro book? Shouldn't the stuff in this book be "the basics"? I noticed that the style of writing (somewhat organization of thoughts, but mostly the tone/way of talking) varied. I also found more than one topic to be repeated in detail. Oh no, not just "refer to section ___ for more info"... nope... totally repeated.

I hate the organization of the book. I feel like the chapters are out of order. The chapters also, I feel, could have been focused differently to better tackle material.

Also, while a great deal of theory is helpful, I sure wished I'd seen some basic info included for actual benchwork. I wanted to see more of typical concentrations, troubleshooting, controls, etc. Because now I just look at this book and think, hmm... the info in that book I can get for free on the internet, probably faster and more detailed. I don't want to lug that thing around to work, etc. No way. Good for class though, I suppose. At least at the end of each chapter there is a recommendations section for further reading.

One of the best lab books available

I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all. Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic. Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.

It's an older book now but a really useful review of common bio lab techniques and a good reference for those rules of thumb and values you can't quite remember. Parts of it will always be useful.

Ich habe mir dieses Buch in erster Linie wegen der Noten zu dem genialen Song "The Groover" geholt, doch auch der Rest des Buches konnte mich begeistern. Ich nehme seit knapp zwei Jahren Klavierunterricht und komme mit dem Niveau des Buches ganz gut zurecht. Da ich immernoch schwächen im Notenlesen habe hat sich die CD als sehr hilfreich erwiesen wenn es um Timing und Rhythmus geht. Einen halben Stern abzug gibt es da allerdings für den regelrecht störenden Beat der das Klavier/Keyboard auf der CD begleitet. Da wäre mir gar nichts oder auch ein schlichtes Metronom wirklich lieber gewesen(auch wenn der Verfasser genau das ja vermeiden wollte).Einen weiteren Halben Stern abzug gibt es dafür, dass keine Fingersätze angegeben sind. Die würden das Buch abrunden und es zu einem sehr guten Lehrbuch machen. Aber nichtsdestotrotz ein geniales Buch!

Ich finde das Buch wirklich sehr gut. Ganz im Stil wie der 1. Band, ist die Mischung zwischen Theorie und Songs ausgewogen. Und auch die Leute, die eigentlich nur die Lieder spielen wollen, sollten sich mal die Theorie-Ecke anschauen, da kann man wirklich viel lernen. Nur einen Punkt finde ich ein bisschen schade: Insbesondere gegenüber dem anderen Buch sind kaum "fetzige" Songs vorhanden."Nightdriver" und vielleicht noch "Timekeeping" knallen so richtig rein. Ansonsten sind einige Stücke zwar flott, aber nicht so, dass sie einem sofort ins Ohr fallen. Das ist für die "Schnellspieler" schade, aber dennnoch liegt hier ein sehr gutes Buch zur Auswahl, welches man sich wirklich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.

Ich habe das Buch schon seit über 15 Jahren und spiele die Stücke immer wieder mal Freunden vor. Jetzt habe ich das Buch nachgekauft und einer Freundin geschenkt. Allerdings ist mir aufgefallen, dass die Stücke auf der CD (früher war es eine Kassette) mit Instrumenten (wahrscheinlich aus den Midi Studio) begleitet werden. Dadurch klingen die Beispiele irgendwie billig. Ich finde die Songs als reine Pianostücke sehr viel besser. Aber das Buch hat mindestens 5 Sterne verdient. Die Gründe dafür stehen schon in all den anderen positiven Bewertungen.

Franklin Veaux has been ideologically polyamorous his entire life, functionally polyamorous since 1984, and writing about polyamory since 1998. Monogamy has never made much sense to him. (When he heard a fairy tale about a princess forced to choose between two handsome princes, he thought everyone knows princesses live in castles And castles are big enough for both princes. So why does she have to choose? )

He started practicing non-monogamy from the moment he started becoming aware that boys and girls are different. Along the way, he's made just about every mistake it s possible to make in polyamorous relationships. Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from poor judgment.

Today, he has five partners, lives in Portland, Oregon, and spends a great deal of time writing about everything from relationship ethics to transhumanism to computer security.

Eve Rickert is a professional writer, editor and mastermind, and the co-author, with Franklin Veaux, of the newly released polyamory book More Than Two. Until taking time off from life to write the book, she co-organized a group for poly women in Vancouver, Canada and she blogs at the More Than Two website. She owns a science communications firm in Vancouver, Canada, called Talk Science to Me.

Eve has been living poly since 2008, though her poly roots go back much deeper. Her approach to poly has changed radically over the years: from early experiences in high school, to first hearing the word polyamory in 1998, to first swingers party in 2006, to her current three long-term relationships. Honesty, trust, communication, compassion, integrity... All great tenets to have in any healthy relationship. Putting people above and beyond the relationship, rather than as playthings, should be a mantra to ethical behaviors whether friendships, sexual encounters or romantic relationships. I was going through a tough start of a relationship while reading this and it really helped to frame things for me, especially in the polyamory sense, that it it's important to surround yourself with ethical people in all matters of life as they are reflections of you and vice versa. This is a choice that we all have, and we should hold ourselves accountable to that.

I really enjoyed reading and listening to this book. Very eye opening and quite relatable in many of the real life experiences expressed in the book. Has helped me a lot to understand this realm of this type of relationship. Ties well with Ethical Slut. I believe also, this book in general can help with any kind of relation a person choose. Lots of good core values people should apply in a happy healthy relationship. I always keep going back to this book when I seem to struggle.

Great book for relationship advice!

This author is one of my favorites! I am a mental health professional and often give my clients his materials to read. He provides effective and practical techniques and has excellent insights into relationships and the way men think in particular. I have enjoyed his website, Relationship Headquarters and have also used his techniques effectively in my own relationships. His recommendations are insightful and effective and his books tell you what to do step by step. Great value girls!!

Good advice

Although this book is designed to help women learn what makes men tick, this book can also to used to learn how to be true to yourself. Bob Grant suggests a shift in mindset that uncovers a pleasant surprise. Suddenly the anxiety of a first date or any date is largely diminished because you've discovered that everyone brings something to the table. I would recommend Bob Grant's book to anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and about relationship building.

Advice for 13 year old girls

I bought this based on the great reviews, which must be written by friends of the author. There is nothing here beyond act confident and look him in the eye and enjoy yourself. Literally. There are no insights about men, and nothing you don't already know. Add to that the sloppy editing, and you've got someone willing to say anything for a buck. This rating is actually no stars, because it's really 10 pages of Cosmo advice.
