Nicole Revel, Emeritus Research Director, CNRS, Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN), Paris, France and Doctor honoris causa in Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, is a linguist-anthropologist working on 'literature of the voice', verbal arts, the performing arts and local knowledge about nature with the Palawan. She has conducted extensive fieldwork on endangered languages and artistic expressions in collaboration with various cultural communities in the Philippines and Nusantara since 1991 in order to build this collection and digitized archive.

More for the Pixar fans

[[VIDEOID:34646791]]If you're still wondering about the real story of Pixar's Up, this book provides very good clues (or spoilers). I'll just say it's about Carl, the old man, going on a journey in search for meaning to his life. The directive from the top was to make Up "the studio's most emotive film to date".

Tim Hauser has provided a good writeup into design style and production process of the movie. There's talk on the story arc, themes, the characters and a bit on the artistic side of production, like visiting a jungle for the research. The Pixar story team provided lots of quotes giving great insight into the story process. On the technical side to animating, nothing much is mentioned.

The challenge for this movie is aimed at simplicity. The character designs are based on simple shapes like squares (Carl), ovals (Russell, balloons), bullets (dogs), etc. I've the impression there are less sets and characters compared to other Pixar movies. There seem to be only the city, the sky (flying objects) and the jungle (big). You can see the focus is going to be on the characters.

The art included are character designs, storyboards, color scripts and few environmental paintings. Descriptions for the illustrations come in the form of quotes. There are lots of character sketches for the main characters, Carl, Russell and the house. Readers looking for the plot will find that in Lou Romano's colour scripts. It seems that there's a new (to me) character designer, Daniel L�pez Mu�oz, doing plenty of character sketches.

What you're not going to see are film stills, background paintings and pastels. No idea why but the number of background paintings always pales in comparison to non-Pixar art books. And there's only one pastel painting from Dominque Louis. I miss the pastel paintings included in earlier movie art books.

This book is really more for Pixar fans.

"Hey this doesn't look like one of Pixar's better art book is it?", a colleague remarks to me. Another goes "Not the kind of style I like". Well, I guess it's not for everyone but here are the pictures you can see for yourself. =)

A Fantastic and Different Book for a Fantastic and Different Movie!

Up is a different sort of movie than is commonly made by anyone much less Pixar. The themes addressed in the film are gut wrenching as well as inspiring, and to really gain insight into the methods used to bring them to the screen required a different approach than the average "Art of" book.

Though I have been a fan of Pixar since they came on the scene, I have never been compelled to buy any of their previous "Art of" books. With Up, I was so profoundly moved by this masterwork of a film that I had to find out everything I could about the process of making it! This book does that and more. Filled with carefully chosen preproduction art that shows the evolution of all the major characters and settings, this work also presents the evolution of the perspectives of the creators as they changed throughout the process.

The layout of the book takes inspiration from a prominent volume in the film, with similar colors, a "paste up" style and a very nice emboss hidden under the dust jacket. The paper quality is superb, as is the binding. This is a book that is meant to be looked at often and for a long time.

Even though I would love to have seen ALL the art from Up included, I came away feeling very satisfied in that I had seen more than expected, and all of the "most important" pieces. If you are like me and simply had to have more of Up, this book satisfies that urge and more. For everyone else, The Art of Up is a loving look at the masters of storytelling at work!

art of? making of? quotations?; dunno, but this book is a bit boring,

The drawings are great, the artwork is as always superb, ... but why all those quotations, 65 of them taking up al that space, with an ugly 'like written' type for the name of the person, a type screwing up the pages.
There's sometimes one every page, and some are oppressing signed one_liners becoming more 'important' than the drawings.

It's a thing that didn't bother me with the Ratatouille book, these 'notes' and in Up it's maybe just a layout problem, (We love people explaining the creative process behind the movie).
In the Ratatouille book the type was smaller, they were lesser, more concentrated, more instructive with the artwork, closer to the drawings, quotations accompanying the drawings.
In UP I sometimes had the feeling of drawings almost being secondary.

There are 14 of such notes in Monsters, none in The Shorts art book, one of the best art books out there.

So 5 stars for the amazing art_work, minus two for the editing.

I am giving this book 5 stars on behalf of the friend I gave it to as a Christmas gift! I know nothing about the subject, however, my friend is very passionate about muscle cars, and she and her husband owned a few of these cars over the years. They were raving about the book and the photos of the cars and even found a couple tidbits of info. that they didn't know. In addition, the book is nicely mad so they are definitely leaving this as their coffee table book.

Its simple, elegant and the best!

One of the best books on the subject. I really liked the way author had kept the text so meaningful.

Here are the reasons why this book is great:
1. Its damn simple but yet author had explained all concepts like Functor, Monad etc
2. Real world examples are shown by using Reddit API, I guess its a cool idea.
3. Reader will create a simple functional library, which includes, each, map, reduce, once, MayBe etc with all code samples and examples. This makes the book really different from others in the market. If your new to functional program, this type of teaching will help you! Many developers doesn't know who `map` function works!
4. Chapters code are put up in Github, which is again simply superb to use.

All in all its a great book for the newbies on the "functional" subject.

Note that this book wont teach Javascript, but using Javascript it teaches Functional Programming and how to use it in Js!

One of the best book on functional programming

One of the best book on functional programming. The author made really good job explaining his journey on through the topic, starting with very basics like pure functions and referential transparency and ending with functors and monads. Comparing to other books on that paradigm (be it any language of your choice Python, F#, Clojure or Haskell) this book wins by clarity and enthusiasm.
This is why I would recommend the book to all who are interested in FP, no regards what language they prefer.

The classic, definitive, world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of 1937, finally available again and bound in leather and linen. The text in these stunning volumes is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour, and George Cattermole.

The Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on natural cream-shade high quality stock, quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker, and feature special printed endpapers. Each volume is wrapped in a protective, clear acetate jacket.

The books are available as individual volumes, or as sets. Very moving stories and a great publishing house

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.
I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.
Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

Review of the Nonesuch Dickens edition

My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by Barnes and Noble. The book itself is in quality hardback. "The Christmas Books" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color is red].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color.

The text is set in Martin's Type and the etchings were printed and hand-colored by A. Alexander and Sons Ltd. This is a beautiful and affordable classic [I own six of them and plan to get the rest] and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.

Full of joy and goodness

The first thing to point out with this collection is that it is well worth getting just for the first tale (the Christmas Carol). Christmas Carol, by far and away, more than matches the hype and is (dare I say it) genius! No other story (that I know of) imbues the spirit of christmas more perfectly and faithfully and this book is worth purchasing just for that.

However, tales two and three ('Chimes' and 'Cricket on the Hearth') are not quite so good and do let the collection down. 'Chimes' is a good story in essence: it is about a charactor called Trotty who becomes cynical about human nature and is taught a redemptive lesson by the spirits that live in the bells of the local church.
The really erksome thing is that the story never really seems to go anywhere and goes around the houses trying to do so. What should be a clear-cut and heartwarming tale, ends up not really imparting the lesson that it should; that man is built for better things.

'Cricket on the Hearth' is a little better and clearer in what it is aiming for and in its writing although I did read through ten pages of it where not a lot happened. Essentially it is about a carrier (Peerybingle) and his wife Dot who are watched over by a Guardian Angel in the form of a cricket. In a similar way to Christmas carol, this tale covers a redemption plot of the local toymaker (Tackleton) but also includes several other elements that make it an enjoyable Christmas tale.

So, to conclude, the first story in this book should be read by everyone, the second can be skipped and the third is worth reading, if only at Christmas time. As a collection, this book excludes the rather poorer tales of 'Battle of Life' and 'Haunted man', which is a redeeming virtue - if it excluded 'Chimes' as well, then it would be a true masterpiece.

About the Author
Gerald Garratt spent most of his career, apart from wartime service, at the Science Museum, London, and for many years he was in charge of the Communications Collections. He had completed six of this book's seven chapters before his death in 1989, and subsequently his daughter Susan Garratt has edited and prepared the final chapter based on material Gerald had collected from Marconi.

Radio was as much the culmination of the work of a series of scientists in the 19th Century, starting with Faraday, as it was an invention by Marconi. This book aims to illustrate the contributions made by these scientists and show how each was dependent upon the work and ideas of his predecessors; Faraday, Henry, Maxwell, Hughes, Fitzgerald, Hertz, Lodge and Marconi. The book represents the result of a long period of study by a man who knew the story well and researched it thoroughly; although Gerald Garratt died in 1989 the manuscript has been completed by his daughter.
Gerald Garratt had a special interest in what might be termed the "pre-history" of radio. His book therefore outlines the sequence of development from Faraday's first prediction and concept of the electromagnetic field, the mathematical definition of the conditions for propagation of waves by Maxwell, the demonstration of their physical existence by Hertz, identification of the need for resonance between transmitter and receiver by Lodge and finally Marconi's successful practical application and "invention".

Unique Insights to Electromagnetic and Radio History

Garratt's text is one of very few sources to present Faraday's long forgotten 1832 letter in which he predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves while James Clerk Maxwell was still in diapers. Garratt was especially interested in the work of Heinrich Hertz, and his friendship with Frau Hertz, who fled Nazi Germany for Britain in 1936, enabled him to acquire some of Hertz's original manuscripts for the museum at which he was employed. Garratt's Early History of Radio is written from the perspective of a passionate technologist eager and able to fill in the gaps of standard historical treatments. His work offers many unique insights I've found no where else.

Very well written; both technical and non-technical readers will enjoy this book

This is one of the rare very well-written and technical books on the history of radio. Of course, Wikipedia provides the same information, but there is a narrative here that is both very readable and authoritative. And, unlike radio history books written by non-technical authors, this one clearly and correctly explains the subject. The only weakness is that there are no schematics, e.g., RLC circuit diagrams, but that is eclipsed by the author's obvious mastery of the English language.

Ich bin von dem Buch nicht angetan. Eigentlich wollte ich nur einen Stern vergeben.Als ich das Buch zurückschicken wollte, kam allerdings der Hinweis dass keine Rücksendung notwendig ist und die Gutschrift so veranlasst wird. Dieser Service hat mich sehr begeistert und dafür gibts Sterne für den Händler.Nun zum Buch:Ich kenne die Trick 17 Bücher. Ich hatte keine hohe Erwartung. Dass ich keine Profitipps erhalten werde war mir klar. Es ist ja kein Foto Fachbuch für 40 Euro mit Lehgängen etc. Als Hobbyfotograf ist allerdings eine gewisse Grundausstattung vorhanden. Daher werde ich meine teure Kamera, die spritzwassergeschützt ist beim Fotografieren im Regen/bei Niesel nicht in eine Plastiktüte mit Loch für das Objektiv stecken. Mal davon abgesehen dass ich dann keine Einstellungen mehr vornehmen kann. Wenn ich draußen bin und einen Hack sofort benötige kann ich wenig abwenden da ich erst aus gewissen Materialien, die ich nicht immer zur Hand habe, etwas basteln müsste (Kaffee to Go Becher, Gummiband, Plastiktüte, Frischhaltefolie, Filzstift...)Ich hatte gehofft in solchen Situationen Tricks in dem Buch zu finden.Sehr schade ist auch dass man wenig Beispiele sieht wie sich die Empfehlung tatsächlich auf mein Foto auswirkt. Das Bild muss ja nicht groß sein. Es ist hier ja nur ein kleines Büchlein, dass dadurch nicht unnütz dick werden soll. Wenn keine Fotos abgebildet werden frage ich mich ob der Hack wirklich funktioniert.Schade, ich hätte gern ein Buch verschenkt aber das lasse ich lieber.

Habe das Buch heute den gesamten Nachmittag verschlungen und schon ein paar interessante Gimmicks aus dem Buch gebastelt.Das Buch bietet eine bunte Vielfalt zwischen Erfahrungswissen der Autorin in Sachen Portraitfotografie als auch Basteltipps für den kleinen Geldbeutel.Ich, als Nicht-Profi, finde solche LowBudget Lösungen sehr hilfreich. Für den Preis von 8€ kann man überhaupt nicht meckern - gute Tipps, kleines Format des Buches, was auch in den Rucksack passt bei Ausflügen und viele Bilder.5 verdiente Sterne in meinen Augen.

Für Fotografie habe ich mich immer begeistern können und ich bin dankbar für Tipps wie man Fotos besser machen und tolle Effekte mit einfach Mitteln erzeugen kann daher sprach mich das Buch „Trick 17: Fotografie“ sehr an.Das Format des Buchs ist im praktischen Pocket-Format also 12,5 cm breit und 16 cm hoch, somit kann man es toll in der Handtasche mitnehmen und immer mal wieder hinein sehen.Schon beim ersten durchblätter fällt die farbenfrohe Gestaltung auf und die Bilder sind sehr ansprechend und zum teil selbsterklärend. Die Beschreibungen sind leicht verständlich und nachvollziehbar außerdem sind sie sehr kurz gehalten.Der Inhalt unterteilt sich in folgende Rubriken:Portrait & SelfieLandschaft & ReiseBewegung & ActionMakro- & NahaufnahmenEffekte & BokehDazu gibt es noch Checklisten, Ratgeber, Buchtipps und das Impressum.Das Vorwort ist recht kurz gehalten und dann folgen auch schon die 111 Hacks.Hier sind wirklich unglaublich viele Tipps und Tricks zu finden, einige sind mir schon mal über den Weg gelaufen aber viele waren für mich neu und ich werde auch noch einiges davon nachmachen und übernehmen. Besonders die Effekte & Bokehs haben es mir angetan aber insgesamt sind hier tolle Möglichkeiten, mit kleinem Geld großes zu bewirken, gegeben.Natürlich ist es kein Roman und ich lese es nicht einfach so hintereinander weg, das ist möglich und wird nicht langweilig, ich habe das Buch aber immer mal wieder in die Hand genommen, mit was angesehen und geblättert, hier was interessantes gefunden und dann konnte ich es sacken lasen. Es eignet sich also ideal für einen kleinen Blick zwischendurch.Fazit:„Trick 17 Pockezz – Fotografie“ eignet sich hervorragend für einen kleinen Blick zwischendurch. Hier werden 111 Hacks aufgeführt die leicht nachvollziehbar sind und auch mit wenig Geld sehr gut umzusetzen sind. Ich finde es ein wertvolles kleines Büchlein das man auch gut mit in die Handtasche nehmen kann. Ich kann „Trick 17 Pockezz – Fotografie“ sehr empfehlen.

Das Taschenbuch ist für alle die geeignet, die auch mit kleinem Geldbeutel tolle Effekte erzielen wollen. Auch ich habe mir – früher wie heute – viele der Utensilien (wie Reflektoren und Lichtformer) selber gebastelt, wenn ich sie nur gelegentlich brauche. Viele alte Hasen werden über manche Tricks vielleicht schmunzeln. Einsteiger finden aber in dem Buch gebündelt über 100 tolle Tricks, mit denen man sicher ein paar Euro sparen kann.Mit dem Format und für den Preis ist das kleine Büchlein ein ideales Geschenke-Buch für einen Hobby-Fotografen.

Re-issue of How to Knit a Wild Bikini, but definitely worth a second read!

This book is a re-issue of How to Knit A Wild Bikini. I first read the story a few years back and couldn't remember what the story or plotline was. Once I started into the reissued version, I did remember the plot, and despite this, it still kept me entertained throughout the whole book. The main characters are Jay Buchanan, a playboy editor of a man's magazine, who is playfully called Hef Junior in the book. He's sworn off women for a year, but needs to hire a chef for a short term summer stint to feed him and the teenage cousin who's staying with him in his Malibu house. Nikki is a chef who has just quit her restaurant job due to the strain it's putting on her injured knee, which for some reason she hasn't had fixed yet. Before interviewing her, Jay mistakenly thought Nikki was a lesbian (her friend who previously worked for Jay was a lesbian and he assumed she was as well) and only agrees to hire her if she would pretend to be his girlfriend while she worked there. He knows she is straight and feels the attraction between the two of them and their teasing conversations about her sexual leanings is witty and fun to read. Christie Ridgway is very skilled at writing passages where you can honestly feel the chemistry between these two and this book doesn't disappoint. There are a couple of side story lines going on in this book with Nikki's relationship with the owner of the knitting shop, the poor little rich girl who lives next door and Jay's teenage cousin who is in over her head with a more aggressive older teenage boy. The only part of this book I just didn't get was the rich girl next door and the gardener. That just didn't make sense and without revealing the plot, the last part of her story just didn't sound plausible to me. The rest of the book however, is worth the price and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Cozy, tender read for the beach!

Nikki Carmichael is at a crossroads. Due to an injury she’s leaving behind her treasured job as a sous-chef at a top restaurant to go out on her own as a private chef…she hopes. With no money, no family, no friends and just a wind-up toy fish as a pet, Nikki Carmichael needs a job…and a life. She has just one name to call on for an interview and he’s too hungover to remember placing the request.
Jay Buchanan is the Bachelor of Malibu Beach. As the editor of the top men’s magazine, he is known by everyone, surrounded by people wanting to be his friend (mostly ladies) and is definitely NOT lacking in the ‘life’ department. Whereas he doesn’t need help in the bedroom, he does need help in the kitchen and that is where he and Nikki strike a deal. She’ll cook meals for him and a teenaged niece staying with him and cater a party for his parents and he’ll go back to enjoying his life. Simple idea just not so simple in practice.
Nikki bugs him. She has layers and his reporter personality can’t help but want to dig through them all and find out what makes Nikki tick. She’s very solitary, yet can’t help but be swept up in the craziness that is Jay’s life. The walls she’s built to protect her heart really has no hope against the storm that is Jay Buchanan. Add on a surprise announcement she never saw coming, and Nikki knows her life will never be the same.
This is not a very complicated story, despite some of the twists, but it definitely will keep you entertained as you lay out on a beach or in front of a fire. It’s a sweet, love story with plenty of passion between Jay and Nikki. Its part one of the Billionaire’s Beach series and I think the tamest of the three. It can definitely be read as a standalone, but it does lead a nice ground work for the next two books which really pull at some heartstrings so I would definitely recommend you read on for the next two books!

Great story

I loved this story!! It was excellent. Jay are Nikki are awesome characters, very well written. I loved their personalities and quirks throughout the story too. I loved how we also got a secondary story with the next door neighbor at the same time as Jay and Nikki's. The story flows very well and I love how the sisters are blended in.
Nikki is working as Jay's chef for a month to try and let her knee get some rest and to make contacts for another private chef job afterwards. Jay has decided to swear off women and so when he sees Nikki and is drawn to her he wants to avoid hiring her but Nikki refuses to take no for an answer which causes her to have to play Jay's girlfriend to get him out of an awkward situation. They deny their feelings from the beginning because neither wants to actually go there for different reasons. I love how they work it out in the end and how the process goes for both of them.
Their banter is awesome throughout the story. It's one of my favorite things about it. I definitely enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next one.
