A real fantastic book written in a style to really get you going in all things VR with Unity. More please.

this book focuses solely on Virtual Reality (VR) over Augmented Reality (AR) solutions. In its pages you’ll discover how VR apps and games differ from their desktop counterparts and what really goes in to making them (especially focusing on scale!, very important), walks you through several different types of VR solutions like Diorama’s, First person controllers, riding on rails (like a rollercoaster), 360 projections (you are IN the painting) and social VR. You’ll even delve in to several VR implementations inside Unity 5 such as the Oculus rift and (for those of you without a few hundred � or $ to spare) Google cardboard.

Virtually everything for everyone

As expected, the beginning chapter talks thoroughly about what VR is and what it isn’t, together with an in-depth comparison between VR and AR. It also goes through all the different VR style experiences and how these apply to both apps and games. Finally it covers some of the technical skills you’ll need (yes you do need Math!) to build effective VR solutions.
Objects and scale

A no-nonsense intro to Unity (practically just one page, which I like because too many titles waffle on about “installing unity”) followed by a deep dive into creating your first VR scene, before finishing off with a high level walkthrough creating a basic asset in Blender (a free 3D modelling tool) and importing it in to Unity, keeping an eye on the all-important scale (I did say scale is important!)
VR Build and run

So you have your VR scene, now what? Time to get it on a device, whatever you have to hand. This chapter does a nice big overview of the many options of building your VR solution through Unity, focusing eventually on building for the Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard (if you are buying this book, you should have some spare change for a cardboard device at least, especially since the Vis-VR is only �2.50, oh and you’ll need a mobile device as well Open-mouthed smile)
Gaze-based control

In this chapter you’ll implement a gaze based control system (point and click for your eyes), together with some third person basic AI and nav meshes.
World space UI

Time to start messing with the new UI system and building a World Space UI for your VR viewer to see and use in your VR scenes. Not quite the full Iron Man overlay but close. It does cover however, a basic Visor, reticule, windshield hud, info bubbles and much more.
First-person character

Switching gear, it’s time to get behind the eyes of the player and allow them to “play as themselves”. Walking through all the tips and tricks necessary to not have your player vomiting all over the floor and ripping off the goggles, it’s important to ensure your player has a good experience in your VR environment.
Physics and the environment

Taking the first-person view up a notch, the author adds a little physicality to the player’s experience, allowing them to jump and knock stuff over. Not quite the VOID experience (if you don’t click on that link, you are truly missing out!) but virtually close.
Walk-throughs and rendering

So far the player has been in control, but some experiences work best if they just sit back and relax, letting you guide them around a scene or view (getting out of a rollercoaster while it’s moving is not recommended, even in VR!). This chapter covers building a tour scene, putting some more blender content to work and making the best out of the scene, while keeping a firm eye on what you need to do to provide the best performance with the hardware you have at your disposal.
Using all 360 degrees

(I Hands down love the image that introduces this chapter Open-mouthed smile)
With another slant on VR we enter the art world, or more poignantly, 3D imagery and photosphere’s. Taking a whole world scene for the user to view and explore, taking a flat image and wrapping it around the viewers head.
Social VR Metaverse

Akin to Neil Stephenson’s Snow Crash, the author breaks down those single player walls in a VR experience and explores what more than one person can do in the MetaVerse, building a VR chat room when multiple VR participants can enter a room and talk (like your everyday meetings but FUN).

Pros / Cons and conclusion

Overall, I’m very impressed with this title, both for its content and approach but also because the author writes and thinks like me Open-mouthed smile. There is a very clear intention to structure the content so that it is easily read and informs the reader at a clear pace. Also unlike the previous title, it covers a much more varied level of content and approaches to VR. As books go, it’s one of the best ones I’ve read recently (baring my own Smile with tongue out of course), certainly one to pick up if you want to get serious about VR.

You’ll get several projects with a great variety of approaches, just about everything you would need for VR

Con’s

For once I’m stumped. I simply have nothing bad to say on this title. Fantastic effort!

Nicely Done

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was far more informative than I thought it would be. I have both the Oculus Rift DK2 and the Google Cardboard device, and I could follow the examples pretty closely. I have a bit more experience with Unity than this book requires. So I was able to modify some of his logic and do more interesting things. I created a demo application that has a trampoline, an elevator, an infographic of the history of the world, a 360 degree panorama and a photo-sphere. He does a good job explaining the basics of HUD design, multiplayer networking considerations, and social networking. And he provides several resources where one can go to obtain more information.

This was an excellent book to work through. I have learned so much and am excited to try out some of the ideas on my own projects. I enjoyed it so much, that I am planning on working through the entire book again from page one. Well done to the author - I would recommend it to anyone interested in developing for virtual reality!

On the Inspiration for The Only Thing to Fear
I've always been a history nerd, and I've always loved thinking about historical "What If's?" What if Lincoln had never been shot at Ford's Theatre? What if Rome had never fallen to the Vandals? Or what if the Nazis had won WWII and colonized the United States? This last question really got me thinking. I started imagining a girl growing up under a terrible regime, where Nazis soldiers patrolled her Virginian town and where Hitler's grandson resided at the White House. I began writing about this girl, and soon this idea turned into the early draft of The Only Thing to Fear.�

About the Author
Caroline Tung Richmond is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Baltimore Sun, Highlights for Children, and USAToday.com, among other publications. The THE ONLY THING TO FEAR is her debut novel.
A self-proclaimed history nerd and cookie connoisseur, Caroline lives in the Washington, DC, area with her husband; their daughter; and the family dog, Otto von Bismarck named for the German chancellor (naturally).

No ordinary dystopian novel--read this now

We all sometimes think about the ultimate question: What if? What if I had superpowers? What if my friends died? What if the Nazis had won WWII?

For 16-year-old Zara, those “what ifs” are part of her day-to-day life. It has been 80 years since Germany reigned victorious over the Allied powers and history took a sharp turn. The US is divided between German, Japanese and Italian rule. Genetically engineered soldiers roam the streets Zara’s town looking for anyone daring to defy the strict Nazi rule. Very few children go to school, and those that do are German. Zara lives her life in fear, not only at the memory of losing her mother but also of what would become of her if anyone knew exactly what she was capable of. Lead by her uncle’s group of rebels, Zara goes on a frightening mission that puts her loyalties to the test and shows exactly how far one can go to stand up for what’s right.

THE ONLY THING TO FEAR can be summed up in two words: realistically frightening. From page one, readers learn that this is no ordinary dystopian novel. This heart-stopping novel goes to the extremes of what could have been and what may have
been done. Yes, it is another story about a teenager overthrowing a psychopathic government, but there’s a reason so many modern YA books share this theme. Today’s youth thrive on powerful characters that take control; they feed on it until their own inspiration grows.

I loved this book

I loved this book it kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop talking about it, my mom said don't tell me I'll just read it. This must have been the best book I have ever read. I love books about world war 2. I don't like to read a lot bu I finished this book in 5 days that a new record. I wish Caroline Tung Richmond could make a second. My favorite characters were Zara and Bastain ❤️

Great YA read for both genders

I received a copy of this book from Scholastic and Net Galley in exchange for a fair review
In an alternate history, the Nazi's won WWII and are still running things 80 years later in the USA. The protagonist wants to join the underground rebellion but her uncle forbids her to take part in the dangerous activities or use the powers she has inherited as a result of genetic alterations in her father.
This was a great YA read for all genders. The protagonist is female but she is not overly girly for a boy to relate to. The plot is tightly crafted, the pacing is great, and it was full of action. I appreciated the fact that there wasn't a dreaded love triangle or even a lot of romance -- this book was about raising a rebellion and did a good job of staying focused on that. The book wasn't perfect, but I read it straight through and enjoyed every minute. The language and situations are appropriate for the 13+ crowd, but I was engaged as an adult reader. I will add it to my classroom library and recommend it to my students.

Cultural psychology is a great book to enter the fascinating world of how culture shapes the way think and the way we act. Many questions can have a cultural explanation, such as:
- why does the US South seem so much violent than the North?
- how does culture shape our parenting decisions?
- are your self-concept and motivation related to the culture you live in?
- is your perception of what is fair and just a consequence of your beliefs or your culture's?
- to what extent is your thinking style influenced by your cultural environment?
Even health is affected by culture. Incredibly, there are mental conditions that are virtually nonexistent in Western societies, whereas others, such as depression, can manifest differently in Eastern cultures. Psychology itself, which was mainly conceived in the West, may not be as helpful in Asian countries.
There are so many aspects of our lives that are governed by culture and amazingly, this explanation had been neglected for centuries. It wasn't until the 1950's that this interesting field began to show its results.

This is a really great book for anyone interested in the ways that different cultures can affect and shape the way we think. Heine provides examples for almost every single concept that he introduces. Heine is also a very engaging writer, this is probably the first textbook I have ever read that I have felt fully interested in every single topic he brings up. Mankind - the Parasite and the Host

Plagues and Peoples is an informative and very readable summary of the relationship between mankind and disease. The author consistently views disease as a parasite and describes the history of plagues in terms of a parasite interacting with a host population. The parasite and the host interact and, over time, reach an equilibrium within the population that allows the both the parasite and the host to survive.
The most interesting feature of the book is his portrayal of mankind not only as a host, but also as a parasite himself. He uses the term macroparasite to describe human institutions and phenomena that also drain energy and resources from producers. For example, very high taxes or rents, Medieval labor laws and practices, war, and forced migration all drain communities and nations as surely as disease. He provides excellent, while still brief, commentary on the interaction between microparasites and macroparasites and the resultant depopulation of certain areas during certain periods. One might argue that this is not a newly observed correlation, but it has certainly never been explained as clearly and succintly as it is done here.
McNeill covers a range of topics. There is, of course, discussion of the plague and mankinds response to it. There us also commentary on leprosy. Why for example, was leprosy, so common in Western Europe and the Middle East in biblical times, to dissapear in the Middle Ages. ( The answer is not what you think. ) Did syphillis originate in the Americas ? If so it may have been the Aztecs' revenge on the conquistadors. Why are there childhood diseases ?
McNeill's arguements are somtimes intuitive and are, in some cases, based on limited data, especially when he examines the history of disease in Asia and India. However, he is careful to couch his observations in limited terms and clearly points out the limitations of the data. I found this to be a refreshing break from, for example, Guns, Germs and Steel, where the author used very limited data to draw absolute conclusions.
The new introduction ( the book was first publised in 1986 )has an alternate viewpoint on AIDS. He argues that, at the moment, AIDS as an epidemic does not rank among the great killers of mankind such as the plague. He draws some interesting parallels between the current AIDS epidemic and the historical spread of syphillis. I am not sure if I agree with his position, but it was interesting to hear something other than the usual end of the world scenario that often comes out of discussions of AIDS.

Will change the way you look at the world

This is one of those handful of books that will change the way you look at our world. History will never seem quite the same when you finish.
Several earlier reviewers have done a great job of summarizing and analyzing the book. It is unfortunate that this book was given as a high school assignment, and then the students were asked to review it on Amazon. Is it any wonder they gave it 2 or 3 stars, and said it was difficult to understand? Most 15-year-olds do not have the background to fully appreciate this type of work, and unfortunately their reviews skew the book's rating.

panoramic view of history

History can be written from two major vantage points. From the top of a mountain, with broad brush strokes, showing the major streams and landmarks, the BIG picture. Spenser and Toynbee are such historians, so is this book. The other view is from the trenches, the pieces, the small connections that we find so fascinating and absorbing. I believe that the big picture view of this book is a result of how it came into being as an elaboration of a single constellation of ideas that the author discovered while working on _The Rise of the West_, he found they interesting and continued to build the structure around these ideas in this book.
The book is about a collection of related ideas:
Parasitism--as he defines two types macro and micro.
Micro is the form we are familiar with as disease, the times viruses, bacteria, protozoan begin to use us as their energy and food source, to our consternation. He further defines two flavors: epidemic and endemic. Epidemic is the form in bubonic plague that swept Europe for 500 years at regular intervals. endemic is the idea of a parasitic form like the liver flukes that effect irrigated agriculture the world over, or like the civilized childhood diseases that effect the body politic like measles, mumps, smallpox.
Macroparasitism is this author's contribution to the discussion, unique to him as far as i know. Those other human's that prey on the weaker, less organized, less mobile etc. Epidemic macro are the Mongols(which are the topic of what i think is the best chapter in the book) or those horseman like in the movie the "Seventh Samari" who sweep out of the steppes or mountains to seize the harvest. Endemic macro are the priests, kings, emperors, tax farmers, etc who take the hard earned food from the producers without adequate recompense.
Using these ideas he ventures to paint those broad strokes, those vistas in history to show how the major currents, the big pieces fit. To this end the book is very well done, always absorbing, always enough detail to support but not to overwhelm the reader. Yet pithy and curiosity arousing enough to drive you to look into his sources, the real mark of good history.
I was pleased enough to get _Rise of the West_ and will start it next.

This book goes beyond a retelling of the event - you can synthesise for yourself that Neil Armstrong was the only person who could be trusted with the responsibility of bringing the Apollo program to the required results - "to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth".And this inherent skill as a cool engineer still shows through today. He just gets on with the job and has set the event in a perspective that records the acheivement without demanding a place of honour for himself. Frank Borman was the only other choice and he passed over having his fame assured with the Earthrise photograph coming from his mission.You will read how the others that followed did not have the required detachment - some went off chasing religious shadows, others never fitted the event into getting on with the next thing in their life.The Apollo 13 movie in part makes the point that the world had become bored with spaceflight - this is more the fault of the screw ups on Apollo 12 than anything else. Why you would give two navy flyers the responsibility is difficult for even the author to cover off - they destroyed the colour TV camera the instant they started to use it, so no live pictures and thus the inevitable public turn off and thus the loss of public interest in the Apollo program.This is a great book - more for the way it shows the inner resoucefulness and cool decision making skills of Borman and Armstrong, and the nearly as good skills of the others.It's a great read.

Andrew Chaikin provides a great story about the Apollo program that brought 24 astronauts to the Moon and safely back to Earth. And it is not a provision of technical details, instead the riveting descriptions center on people, their feelings and impressions, their fears and expectations. On following the lines it is almost possible to gain some sense of the vast distances or of the loneliness the pilot of the command module could experience as he orbits the Moon, especially on the far side without contact to any other human being, while his companions explore the surface of this strange and remote world.

I have read and re-read numerous books about the space program, but this one, along with Eugene Cernan's The Last Man on the Moon, is, in my opinion, the most intreresting and informative in the lot. It is very well organized and very well researched; Chaikin had interviewed all of the astronauts extensively for the previous decade, and came to terms with their feelings and state of mind upon entering lunar orbit on the voyage of a lifetime. Containing fascinating narrative of all the Apollo missions, Chaikin contains tidbits of the astronauts' thoughts and feelings, and provides exciting descriptions of the major events of the Apollo missions: the liftoff from Cape Kennedy, the lunar landing, the piloting challenge of a lifetime for the astronauts, the moonwalk, and the return to earth. You will be hard pressed to find a better book about the Apollo Program.

I bought several copies of this fabulous work by Andrew Chaikin. This is the best book I can think of to give as a gift to anyone interested in space or history. This book is so good that astronaut Janice Voss took it with her into orbit on her last space shuttle mission. In fact, her crewmates on STS-99 borrowed the book from Janice to read during their breaks from mission routine. A MAN ON THE MOON is essential reading for any individual interested in the space program or American history.Chakin captures the details and spirit of the Space Race better than any author. The author met and interviewed all of the key Apollo players when thay were still alive and he also actually witnessed one of those mighty Saturns leave the earth for the moon. I bought this book not just for myself, but for my children and their future children to enjoy and benefit from.

In this personality-driven new biography, Meyers (Katherine Mansfield; Hemingway; D.H. Lawrence; etc.) turns his discerning eye to an artist whose "painting thrived on chaos," the French-Italian-Jewish bohemian Amedeo Modigliani. A contemporary of Picasso who detested cubism, "Modi," as he was known to his friends, was stricken with tuberculosis at 16. And while the incurable lung disease eventually led to his death at age 35, his rowdy and reckless lifestyle—replete with women, drugs and drink—surely contributed as well. Modigliani's tumultuous behavior, Meyers posits, was inextricably tied to his work. Meyers presents clear readings of Modigliani's paintings and sculptures, spelling out the influence of art nouveau, Lautrec, stylized African sculpture and mannerism on the artist's flat, vividly colored style. He also knowledgeably traces Modi's self-destructive rise from philosophy-reading child to posthumous star. Though Meyers tends to lapse into lengthy mini-biographies every time a new acquaintance of the artist's is introduced (an interlude about Modigliani's ex-lover Beatrice Hastings, for example, segues into a discussion of Hastings's ex-lover Katherine Mansfield) and frequently repeats his thesis (Modigliani was self-destructive!), he has painted a vibrant portrait of a deeply unhappy man. Astute and prolific Meyers, the Joyce Carol Oates of biographers, has concentrated on literary lives, and now turns to artists. He dubs Amedeo Modigliani "the greatest Italian painter since Tiepolo," but, sadly, Modigliani's talent was matched in force by his self-destructiveness. Efficient yet generous with vivid details and intriguing asides, Meyers describes Modigliani's hometown, Livorno, Italy, and portrays the artist's Jewish family, which, tragically, harbored genes for madness. Modigliani arrived in Paris in 1906, handsome as a god, full of sass and ambition, and steeped in Rimbaud and -Nietzsche. Seductive and outrageous, Modigliani knew everyone yet refused to join any of the headline-grabbing movements, developing, instead, an "intensely idiosyncratic vision" that interested nearly no one. A fickle lover, dependent on drink and drugs, and ill with tuberculosis, his dissolution was catastrophic and his poverty appalling, leading inexorably to his death at 35. Meyers explicitly describes the squalor Modigliani fatalistically endured, dispelling romantic notions about starving artists and starkly exposing a cruel paradox--the wretchedness of Modigliani's life versus the transcendent beauty of his art. Fine for the general reader

For the ever-increasing number who discover Modigliani from local museum shows, art appreciation and art history courses, and the mass media, Jeffrey Meyers book will provide a well-written review of known facts about him, some background on a few of his closer friends, the Parisian circle and dealers, as well as a few of his longer-associated lovers. Meyers keeps his focus on Modigliani as a person with sufficient coverage of his work to whet the appetite (perhaps) for a better look at those pictures. Nothing is spared to take the Romance out of the terrible life of a person with life-long tuberculosis, who early on in adulthood became addicted to alcohol, absinthe, ether, hashish, opium, and probably a variety of other destructive drugs. With him, it became a matter of drusg or no painting, and so, those who valued or sought for other reasons his pictures, helped feed his habit. Of course, use of these drugs was commonplace in his crowd so that one had to go to excessive excess, so to speak, to be noticed. Modi, as he was known, did become one of these sad figures
Nonetheless, despite never having any success with his painting, he created a unique body of work, distinctively his own among the artists of Paris (though much influenced by great traditions in art and some from the contemporary interest in the primitive, as it was known). He was a portraitist. Never did he veer toward cubism, landscape, futurism, or any of the other fads and fashions (as well as major contributions) of his time.
He was born to a distinguished Italian Jewish family of Sephardic (Spanish-Portuguese) background; while not a scholarly schoolboy, within the family he received a classical education which deeply influenced him. Poetry and literature were lifelong preoccupations of his. After some art training in Italy he came to Paris which remained his desired home for the rest of his life. He was a member, in good standing but never of successful achievement, of The School of Paris, whose foremost figure was his friend Picasso.
A beautiful man until illness destroyed his looks in the last years of life, he was irresistible to woman, wracking up as many "scores" as any of the very lusty band of which he was part; he had a number of longer-term lovers, though none of them were able to establish a monogamous relation with him, the last of whom committed suicide, with his unborn child inside her, the day after he died. Many, many of these liaisons were conducted in one of the many squalid living quarters in which he lived in his perpetual poverty. Still, even to the end, there was no lack of women eager to have him, and no loss of desire in him (though near the end, the flame burned low, flickered and ultimately died). To those who knew him over the years, close friends like Moise Kisling, he was a literate, sensitive, understanding companion when sober and a humiliated, angry, hostile wretch when not. As the years went by, there were ever fewer periods of the former. He died, in physical and mental deterioration, at the age of 35. Almost immediately after, he became salable on the art market and remains an ever more valuable commodity.
One note of caution in reading this work. Meyer does devote a chapter or two to the pictures, and describes some throughout the book. However, what illustrations there are, are in black and white. making it almost impossible to get much from the descriptions. Having read the book away from home, thus without my many volumes with fully colored, often fine reproductions, this frustrated me. If your interest lies only with this book and not the more extensive discussions of a monograph, of which there are some very fine ones, I would suggest you pick up one of the excellent paperbounds which focus on illustrations in color with minimal text. It will make reading a richer experience at little additional cost.

Good but needs more photo's!

Meyers provides a wonderful insight into the harsh world, both mentally and physically, of Modigliani (Modi) and the art scene at the turn of 20th C Paris. Along with the tortured world of Modi, Meyers also offers bios of Modi's contemporaries, art dealers and lovers...Soutine, Lipchitz, Brancusi, Utrillo, Derain, Picasso, Pascin, Gris, Severini, Kisling etc. And the lives of this lot wasn't all roses either, with a number of them coming to various grisly ends. However, many of them were to find varying degrees of fame during their lifetime. Alas for Modi that wasn't the case. Frequently on the verge of starvation, trading drawings for food, drink & drugs, suffering from tuberculosis, charismatic while sober, menacing while drunk, he wouldn't back down and subscribe to any one of the various "isms" that were currently rife in Paris. He knew he had a unique style lurking within and belligerently strove to expose it. African art had a huge impact on his final style. And even when he managed to sell a painting (often bought out of pity) he would only accept a couple of francs even though the buyer was offering more.

As with most artistic tragedies, Modi was ahead of his time. Towards the end of his life his pictures sold for approx 150 francs. Ten years later those same paintings commanded 500,000 francs. And today they exchange hands at auction for tens of millions of dollars, making Modi's "unique" vision the most sought after compared with his contemporaries (Picasso aside).

Meyers, through Modi and the other artists, provides good insight in to the squalid conditions that existed in Montmartre and Montparnasse. Modi's charm and good looks certainly made him a hit with the ladies. He had a string of lovers and fathered a number of children also. His last love, Jeanne, jumped to her death 2 days after his.

The book is flawed by the short supply of photo's with only 23 works collected here, and they are in b&w. Throughout the book Meyers provides descriptions of many of Modi's works, but due to the scant selection provided I found myself looking elsewhere for images. "A picture is worth a 1000 words" is particularly apt here. Eventually, I found myself skimming over his descriptions as they were fairly arbitrary focusing on colours, body/head positions, which didn't lend anything to the story. I got the impression that maybe Meyers had intended to include a greater selection but possibly for cost cutting or copyright reasons that was curtailed close to publishing. Or he's just padding out the text. Also there appears to be one photograph and 1 painting that are titled differently to the text.

This is the first book I have read on Modigliani so I cannot offer any comparison with other bio's available. I found it to be a good read. Meyers sews together the various aspects of Modi's life well. The writing style is straightforward compared with the convoluted writings that pervade art literature.

Love of the Loved

I cried thinking of the tormented genius we all admired in the recent feature biopic Modigliani starring Andy Garcia. As Jeffrey Meyers points out in his workmanlike bio, Modligiani inspired at least five poems and nine novels, and also there was an earlier biopic which sounds terrific starring from 1958, directed by France's great cinema genius Hacques Becker. This film, Les Amants du Montparnasse, stars Gerald Philipe in the title role, and Lea Padovani (from CHRIST IN CONCRETE) as his leading lady, and of all people Lilli Palmer playing the very English Beatrice Hastings, while poor Anouk Aimee assigned to undergo the mist difficult of all the parts, poor doomed Jeanne Hebuterne. Can't wait to see this one on DVD!

He is on shakier ground however in trying to determine which of Modi's paintings are authentic. It's shocking to see how much Modi's paintings have increased in value over the years. Rats ate a whole slew of his drawings, because they were stained with sausage crumbs and grease. Speculators had a field day, and forgers too. Women loved him and cried real tears when he died, only in his thirties, of painful TB, and poor doomed Jeanne tried to live without him for awhile, but she liked it not, and instead she jumped to her death within 48 hours of his funeral service.
