digest of cohen-tannoudji ++

So this book is very french. it follows the same format as the cohen-tannoudji QM set, and it covers an updated version of the cohen-tannoudji book on atom-photon interactions so popular in quantum-optics/AMO physics. This is like a digested updated version of that textbook. I find it pretty lucid and slightly more user friendly.

About the Author
Richard "Dick" Briefer was an American comic-book artist best known for his various adaptations, including humorous ones, of the Frankenstein monster. Under the pseudonym Dick Hamilton, he also created the superhero team the Target and the Targeteers for Novelty Press. Dick Briefer studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and debuted in comic books in 1936. In December of 1940 Prize Comics #7 first published Briefer's eight-page feature "New Adventures of Frankenstein", an updated version of the much-adapted Frankenstein monster created by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel Frankenstein. The author lives in Hollywood, Florida.

The Evolution Of A Classic Comic Book

It's been said before that Yoe Books has set the standard for deluxe reprints of vintage comic books, but it bears repeating. In Dick Briefer's Frankenstein all the Yoe trademarks are there: excellent reproduction from the original printed pages, high-quality paper and deluxe hardcover binding, and a beautifully designed package. As usual, there's a nice historical essay, this time comprising 16 pages of facts and observations about the comic book and its creator with lots of impossibly rare art. In addition, there's a nifty die-cut cover that lets the monsters eyes show through and gives a nice surprise when you open it. I don't see how it could have been done better.

The comics themselves are particularly fascinating because they show the evolution of the character from story to story, year to year. Starting in 1940 when the American comic book was still in its infancy, the earliest story is a crudely drawn, fairly straight retelling of the Mary Shelley tale. By 1941 the art has improved markedly, but it's still in the gothic horror genre. The next one is drawn a little differently yet. Briefer's style changes with virtually every story. It's as if he was trying not to use the same style twice!

By 1945 the comic undergoes a complete metamorphosis, changing from straight horror to comedy-horror. At this point the character of Frankenstein's monster has more in common with Herman Munster than with the comics from just a couple years earlier. Briefer uses a much looser line and the stories are charming and silly. In 1952's story we see another transformation back to horror, but this time with carefully rendered scenes of violence and mayhem as was the trend in the 1950s. Watching the evolution of Dick Briefer's Frankenstein between these covers is a microcosm of the history of comics, from the Golden Age into the era of pre-code horror and crime comics that almost ended the industry. (If the series had continued into the Sixties I can imagine the Frankenstein monster in a mask and a cape.)

Various Collections highlight different aspects of Briefer's various takes on the Monster

Amazon has the various collections of Briefer's Frankenstein work listed as different editions of the same book but they are not and each is a very different collection. Indeed one can not review each collection separately due to this mix-up. So below are to be found details on each one.

IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics: Dick Briefer's Frankenstein gives the best overview Briefer's humorous and horrific takes on the Monster, with selections of both. All selections are in color printed on flat comic paper; it is like reading something from the spinner rack at the local 5 & 10. Features: Amply-illustrated multi-page introduction by Craig Yoe. (Each volume of The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics is top-notch and is highly recommended.)

Dark Horse's Frankenstein: The Mad Science of Dick Briefer is a collection of the complete first seven issues Briefer's humorous take on the Monster. All stories are in color printed on flat paper but not comic paper; it is like reading a well done trade paperback. Features: One-page forward by John Arcudi. (This is a very nice collection and is recommended. It is interesting to note that Craig Yoe, the driving force behind IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics, is given a special thanks in this collection and thus to this reader that shows that this has some of the "B sides" of Briefer's humorous Monster work that Yoe could not fit in the IDW collection.)

Idea Man Production's The Monster of Frankenstein: Dick Breifer's 1950s Horror Comic Epic is a collection of Briefer's 1949-1952 all-horror take on the Monster. All stories are printed in black and white. Features: Three-page introduction by David Jacobs and Afterwords by E.J. Robinson and Alicia Jo Rabins. (This is a great collection of Briefer's horrific take on the Monster. The black and white printing akin to something from an old Warren Creepy and does not take away from the stories. But, after seeing the color reprints in the other two collections, it is a bit of a let down. It is a soft cover too which, again, when compared to the other hard cover collections, it is a bit of a let down.)

Each of the three books has its pros and cons. In an absolutely perfect world, IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics would have devoted two volumes on Briefer's Frankenstein, one volume dedicated to the humorous like Dark Horse's but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the humorous and one volume dedicated to the horrific like Idea Man Productions but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the horrific. The world not being perfect a reader can choose scholarly, strictly humor, strictly horror, or, like this reader, splurge on all three.

Easy to use

Easy to use; like it because it is spiral bound and can be easily flipped through. Like the way the book systematically highlights the questions and areas of importance within a section (i.e., regular questions, then a what to really watch for/life threatening)
Also nice that it cross references sections; for example, abdominal pain could also be a chest process and directs one to access both sections
I got this for my volunteer nurses at the free clinic and I think (hope) it will help them be more systematic and consistent with their triage.

Sie verstarb überraschend kurz nach Erscheinen dieses Buches, dessen großen Erfolg sie leider nicht mehr miterleben konnte. Dr. med. vet. Pasquale Piturru, geb. 1965, hat diese Neuauflage im Sinne seiner Kollegin aktualisiert, indem er die neuesten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse der letzten Jahre zum Hundeverhalten eingearbeitet hat. Er ist Tierarzt mit Zusatzbezeichnung "Verhaltenskunde und -therapie" sowie wissenschaftlicher Berater und Gutachter. Für den Kynos Verlag verfasste er bereits den Titel "Lassie, Rex & Co. klären auf - So wollen wir verstanden werden".

Aber andererseits... Der Kleine ist so drollig, er ist so knuddelig und süß, daß man, hundemüde wie man ist, nicht umhin kann, ihn einfach gernzuhaben und sich auf eine Zukunft mit ihm zu freuen. In dieser besinnlichen, ruhigen Stunde der ersten ungestörten Zweisamkeit mit Ihrem Welpen haben Sie endlich die Zeit, Ihre Gedanken zu ordnen. Bitte, vergessen Sie es! Wir leben nicht in Hollywood und glauben Sie mir, bis man die Darsteller von Lassie so weit hatte, diese einzigartige Figur im Film spielen zu können, sind sie durch eine lange Schule exzellenter Hundeerziehung gegangen. Selbiges gilt für Rintintin, für Kommissar Rex, Beethoven, Hutch und wie alle diese großartigen Filmgestalten heißen mögen. Vielleicht haben Sie sich einen Welpen einer kleineren Rasse angeschafft mit dem Hintergedanken, einen fröhlichen, unkomplizierten kleinen Wuschel zu haben, irgendwas Herziges zum Knuddeln, das in der Familie einfach so mitläuft und keinen riesigen Erziehungsaufwand erfordert. Sie haben recht: Mit Kleinpudeln etwa ist leichter umzugehen als beispielsweise mit Bullmastiffs. In der Regel. Andererseits haben sich schon manche an der Erziehung eines West Highland White Terriers die Zähne ausgebissen. Die Eigensinnigkeit von Rauhaarteckeln ist allgemein bekannt. Chihuahuas beißen häufig wie die reinsten Nähmaschinen. Viele Zwergschnauzer stehen ihnen da in nichts nach. Vergessen Sie also bitte nicht, daß auch der kleinste Hund Wölfe als Urahnen hat, zum Teil heute noch in wölfischen Kriterien denkt, und, wie klein und niedlich auch immer, als Hund begriffen und respektiert werden will. Oder schwebt Ihnen eine Art Männerfreundschaft vor nach dem Motto: "Wir beide gegen den Rest der Welt..."? Vielleicht haben Sie sich auch gerade deswegen den Welpen einer größeren, imposanten Rasse angeschafft? Einen, der später mit Ihnen durch dick und dünn geht, und Ihnen durch seine Größe und Erscheinung Respekt verschafft? Der es den Leuten, mit denen Sie nicht können, schon zeigen wird und ansonsten Ihr gleichberechtigter Kamerad ist?... Vorsicht, Vorsicht! Denn gerade diese Hunde neigen unpraktischerweise dazu, es nach und nach allen zu zeigen. Zuerst Ihren Kindern und Familienangehörigen, einfach, weil ihm diese wesentlich öfter in die Quere kommen, als Ihre Erzfeinde oder gar Einbrecher. Und am Ende auch ihrem eigenen Herrn, weil Hunde mit gleichberechtigten Partnerschaften auf Dauer so ihre Schwierigkeiten haben. Ein Konzept muß also her. Jetzt. Denn die Erziehung eines Welpen oder seine Nicht-Erziehung hat Auswirkungen auf sein ganzes Leben und muß deshalb von Anfang an in die von Ihnen gewünschte Richtung weisen. Wie Sie in den nächsten Tagen, Wochen, Monaten mit ihm umgehen, wird sein Verhältnis zu Ihnen und zu seiner ganzen Umwelt nachhaltig prägen.

Ich hatte noch nie einen Welpen und daher war ich aufgeregt und unsicher zugleich. Dieser Ratgeber hält schon Tipps bereit, wie man sich am besten einen Welpen aussucht, erklärt einiges zum Verhalten der Hunde (Abstammung Wolf usw.) und erklärt in kurzen und aussagekräftigen Lektionen die ersten Schritte mit dem Hund: die erste Nacht, wie bringe ich Sitz bei, wie lernt der Hund, zu mir zu kommen usw. und mir ist bei einigen Dingen echt ein Licht aufgegangen. Ich war daher echt froh, das Buch schon vorher gelesen zu haben, bevor der Welpe zu uns kam. Damit habe ich mich gleich viel sicherer gefühlt und unser kleiner ist mittlerweile 15 Wochen alt und kann schon ganz viel :)

Er den Besuch anspringt obwohl sie das nicht wollen. Er ständig am Tisch bettelt oder oder oder.Hier wird sicherlich auch ihnen oft ein Spiegel vorgehalten und sie erkennen, das sie hundisch bislang doch noch nicht so gut können wie sie gedacht haben.Ein Buch, für jeden, der einen wohlerzogenen Spielgefährten sucht, der ohne Leine besser hört als der Hund vom Nachbarn ;o)

Wir haben uns viel Zeit genommen bis zur Entscheidung zur Anschaffung eines Hundes. Durch die Fülle der Meinungsinhaber wird es heute nicht einfacher - man will ja alles richtig machen... Es gibt ja sooo viele Experten und sooo viele Tipps.Wirklich wertvoll war uns dieses Buch! Sehr launig verfasst macht es richtig Lust auf den Hund. Vor allem, man bekommt die Sicherheit und das Selbstvertrauen, den neuen Kameraden auch gut erziehen zu können, jeder kann das! Das ist auch der rote Faden der sich merklich durch dieses Buch zieht. Die Worte sind nicht aus der Fachliteratur kopiert sondern sehr verständlich werden die Verhaltensmuster von Hunden anhand von Beispielen erklärt. Der 'Aha-Effekt' stellt sich recht schnell ein.Die Autorin stellt nichts als "Dogma" dar, sondern schildert die Folgen verschiedener Methoden und stellt dann die Frage 'Was wollen Sie?' - man hat die Wahl (oder auch nicht... :-) )Also, jeder Mensch der sich noch überlegt einen Hund anzuschaffen, sollte einen Blick in dieses Buch werfen. Hundebesitzer, denen einige Verhaltensweisen ihres Lieblings nicht verstehen, erst recht! Es ist leicht zu lesen, teilweise sehr witzig und die Illustrationen im Cartoon Stil sind Klasse!Ein Buch das man 'einfach mal so' lesen kann - mit langfristigem Lerneffekten die ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger auskommen.Viel Spass damit ausMylo's Welt

Für Neu-Welpenbesitzer ein sehr informatives Buch. Locker leicht zu lesen und trotzdem lehrreich. Die Zeichnungen peppen alles noch etwas auf. Trotz meiner inzwischen seit einigen Jahren Erfahrung konnte ich noch viel Neues entdecken.Sicher ist es, wie bei der Kindererziehung, manchmal auch Ansichtssache und sicher sind wir auch bei der Erziehung nur "Menschen" und manchmal zu impulsiv um vorher nachzulesen, wie wir optimal reagieren, wenn der Welpe auf den guten Teppich macht oder die Lieblingsschuhe zerkaut hat, aber durch die witzig geschriebene Art behält man doch so Einiges in Erinnerung und sieht die vermeintlichen Katastrophen öfter mit Humor.Die Hinweise auf den wölfischen Ursprung lassen einem noch besser verstehen, warum der Hund so reagiert und wie man effektiv erzieht. Ich habe es vor unserem Welpeneinzug meiner ganzen Familie zum Lesen gegeben.

Leider handelt über die Hälfte des Buches über Welpen bzw. spezielle Tipps für Welpenerziehung.Klar das liegt nahe, wenn es um Erziehung geht, aber viele (so wie auch ich) holen sich solcheBücher eben erst wenn der Hund aus dem Welpenalter raus ist und dann kann ich mit den ganzen gutenTipps für Welpen nichts mehr anfangen.Ich hatte eben mehr mit allgemeinen Tipps gerechnet, die unabhängig vom Alter des Hundes sind.Der Schreibsti des Buches ist sehr gelungen und die Bilder sind erfrischend.Der "nicht Welpenteil" war informativ und hilfreich.

..aus meiner Sicht eins der besten Bücher zur einfachen Hundeerziehung. Ich finde die Beispiele sehr gut erklärt, so dass auch jeder es verstehen kann. Die Bilder unterzeichnen es noch nett, einfach gut.

Kaufen Sie dieses Buch unbedingt, wenn Sie vorhaben, sich einen Hund zuzulegen.Ich habe es schon fünfmal verschenkt.Es ist witzig geschrieben, und man lernt trotzdem etwas über das Wesen seines Hundes.Die Verfasserin weiss, wovon sie spricht, und gehört Gott sei Danknicht zu den modernen "Hundeverstehern", die auf der derzeitigen Welle in den Medien mitschwimmen.Wenn Sie den Text schon mehrmals gelesen haben, schauen Sie sich bestimmt immer wieder gerne diese köstlichen Karikaturen an und erkennen in fast jeder Ihren eigenen Vierbeiner und sich selbst wieder.

Daniel Kahneman is co-winner of the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The award was bestowed in recognition of the influential research conducted by Kahneman and his long-time collaborator, the late Amos Tversky, on the psychology of human judgment and decision-making. According to a recent article published in the journal Psychological Science, the research program initiated by Kahneman and Tversky is considered psychology’s "leading intellectual export to the wider academic world." Current scholarship and research in medicine, law, public policy, international relations, and economics has been profoundly shaped by their insights into human rationality.

About the Author
Daniel Kahneman is Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University and a professor of public affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his pioneering work with Amos Tversky on decision-making.

SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN ECONOMICS THAT LED TO NOBEL PRIZE

Kahneman and Tversky's compilation of articles in this book is an outstanding exposition of recent advances in cognitive psychology, especially advances associated with prospect theory. The work presented in this volume is largely responsible for the authors being awarded the Nobel Prize (Tversky died before receiving it).
The text is somewhat dense at parts, being aimed at economists and psychologists with some mathematical familiarity. However, the portions of the book that require much mathematics can safely be bypassed without losing much of the substance of the text. This text is the most credible presentation of an alternative theory to the rational actor theory usually assumed in economics. For example, some of the articles help explain the magnitude of the equity return premium, or help show how people make choices differently in similar situations based simply on the way the situation is presented.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in decision making theory, especially as it relates to consumer behavior. It is a brilliant volume that includes the most important articles by the leading mind in the field.

The Cutting Edge of Behavioral Decision Theory

Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky have spent their whole lives developing an alternative to the "rational actor" model of human decision-making, the standard of traditional economic theory and the decision sciences. Their ideas were received rather well from the start, but in recent years, their alternative, which we can fairly call "behavioral economics" has virtually displaced traditional decision theory as an active research area.
People often think of the Kahneman-Tversky behaviorists as "bomb-throwers" in the sense that they appear to love to destroy traditional concepts of rationality rather that put constructive models in their place. This collection, which consists of 42 very high quality essays by the leading lights of the field, shows clearly that this is not the case. Prospect theory, loss aversion, framing effets, status quo effect, and the like are carefully modeled in this book. I came away quite impressed.
It is a shame that Amos Tversky never lived to see the light of day of this fine volume. It is certainly a vigorous vindication of his lifetime research agenda.

Risk decisions finally explained

I wonder, what can one say abot work that has already won the Nobel Prize that can possibly add to the estimation of a work? Being far too insignificant to lend any great weight to the already abundant praise for this work, I can only perhaps illuminate an application of the material that seems to have been overlooked.

Regarding the field of risk management (not the wll street kind, but just regular risk decision making in business) this book is of inestimable value. I have often notices certain biases towards risk aversion or risk taking when business decisions are beign made. Much seemed to be due to the context. This work shows exactly why and how decision bias arises. This is the foundation for the creation of a useful risk decision analytical framework.

The paper of interest to me relate to why people will choose to take or avoid risks that, according to utility theory, are the wrong decisions. For example, why pepole buy insurance even when it is a better financial choice to be uninsured. These works explain why and under what circumstances one's biases override logic. Why this is not a common text on the desk of every risk manager, I will never know.

In this one volume, there is enough information to design an utterly new field of risk management and to solve most every problem one can face. This has become the one reference material that I considre indespensible. throw out the CPCU and ARM texts that you never use and can't bear to read ever again. Chuck them and place this volume in their place and you will be far, far better off.

About the Author
Susan J. Hall is Deputy Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the AAHPERD Research Consortium, and she has served as President of the Biomechanics Academy of AAHPERD, President of the AAHPERD Research Consortium, and Vice President of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is also the author of several successful textbooks and has served on several journal editorial boards. After graduating from Duke University, Hall began her career as a high school biology teacher. She earned a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and a PhD from Washington State University. She has been teaching at the college level for more than 30 years.

Michelle Provost-Craig is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware, where she has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in physiology, clinical exercise physiology, and electrocardiogram interpretation for more than 20 years. She is the recipient of the University’s most prestigious awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Advising and Mentoring. She also received a University grant from the Center for Teaching Effectiveness to develop innovative approaches to teaching anatomy and physiology to college students. While at the University of Delaware, she served as the graduate coordinator of the Masters in Exercise Science program and was the founder of their Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Provost-Craig has served in numerous leadership roles for the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and has performed physiological assessments of national and international elite ice figure skaters. She was the Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Regional American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and has participated in several ACSM committees. Dr. Provost-Craig earned a Masters degree from the University of Delaware and a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Maryland.

William C. Rose is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware, where he has taught anatomy and physiology for more than ten years. He is a member of the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine. He is the author of textbook chapters and research articles in the fields of cardiovascular physiology and biomechanics. He has served as a grant proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation and as a manuscript reviewer for scientific journals such as Circulation and the American Journal of Physiology. After graduating from Harvard University with a degree in physics, Rose earned a PhD in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and he worked in research and development for the DuPont Company before joining the University of Delaware.

This is very mixed review. The quality of the book is excellent and I strongly recommend it. The wording in the ad is EXTREMELY MISLEADING. THERE IS NO CD, WEB SITE, OR POWERPOINT SLIDES that accompany this book. You need to pay $130 additional for those, but there is no link to them - you have to hunt.

Here is the wording in question. "An outstanding supplement package that includes a robust companion website, ExamView Assessment Suite CD, PowerPoint lecture slides, detailed lesson plans, and a variety of enrichment labs and activities, will minimize your preparation time." One would think they are part of the package but they are not.

Buyer beware.
