WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.

The Bible of Trees & Shrubs

This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.

I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.

If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. I would suggest:

The tree bible

This book is the tree bible if there ever was one. This has lifetimes of cataloged info on thousands of species. The technical and scientific information is very thorough and I love coming back to this reference book.

The book is huge, think very very large phone book. The used one I got was in great condition but I do wish I would have splurged and got the hardcover. I use it frequently but its too bad I cant really take it out in the field.

Get the 2nd Edition!

McLeod-while occasionally repetative-does a really good job of giving a good overview and summarizing the 'big names' in Postcolonial lit, however there is a 2nd edition out there that is better and a little longer. I'd recommend that one over this one. Especially since most professors want the newest edition.

Don't be scared - John Mc Leod is at hand!

Beginning Postcolonialism provides a basic introduction to the nebulous (and sometimes seemingly-inpenetrable) world of post-colonial theory. If you're encountering post-colonial theory for the first time, or you've already been baffled by Bhabha and scared by Spivak, then this is the book for you! Unlike many post-colonialism readers on the market, Beginning Postcolonialism assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. It provides the reader with a basic understanding of the major themes of post-colonial theory and explains in simple terms the main ideas of pre-eminent post-colonial critics. It's well-written, coherently laid-out and is by far the most encouraging and reader-friendly book on the subject I've come across. The extensive bibliography will be of interest to graduate students, but they may otherwise find that this book is not meaty enough to suit their advanced level of study. For the beginner or the confused, however, it's a great resource!

Excellent Overview

I was so happy to find this book. Even though there is a strong emphasis on literary theory, this book was so helpful in giving an overview of the main thinkers, main issues, key historical points, and key tensions in postcolonial theory. I found it much more helpful than A Very Short Introduction to Postcolonialism. The writing is very accessible. An annotated bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. I think this book would be most helpful to read front to back if you are interested in postcolonial theory from a literary studies perspective. If you are in another field, you may want to skip around. You can find selections from this book (including searching keywords) at google books, which I found helpful in identifying the areas I wanted to read and those I wanted to skip.

Cliffhanger But Great Start

Pursued by Cynthia Dane is part one of a trilogy in His Domination series. It had me flipping through my kindle pages wanting to get to Monica and Henry’s date. Though there was plenty of steam I would have to wait for these two to finally consummate their relationship. I was all right with it. Monica is a natural submissive who has survived a past abusive relationship with her Master. Though she yearns to one day find a loving relationship in a D/s lifestyle, she’s fearful about opening her heart and love to anyone that just wants to dominate her. What Monica wants from Henry is trust, and a firm but gentle hold on her life. Can she hope to learn more about Henry and is he Dom enough to give her what she needs? Trust is the key to opening her heart, to give and receive the love she so desperately needs in her life.

Her past kicks up its ugly head towards the end and I’m hardly keeping my control to find out what happens in the next part. *See what I did there*

Ms. Dane’s writing is fluid and her characters are fully described. The plot is building up to something delicious. Though its written in third person, I like how the author interjects Monica’s internal thoughts and so the reader feels more of her inner turmoil. I don’t usually read stories with cliffhangers because I know me, I want satisfaction, and I mean NOW. But I’m hooked.

Billionaire and BDSM...yum!

Monica is a masterless submissive trying to get over a previous relationship. Along comes Henry, a billionaire who seems to have a lot of time on his hands, given how much of it he spends pursuing Monica for a relationship.

There’s something more to Henry than meets the eye. I bet we find out something about him in a future installment. I can’t wait to read on and see if I’m right. Thanks for the steamy read! I hope other people will check it out, especially if they like hot BDSM.

Can domination be a cure - 4 stars

This was the first book that I have read by Ms. Dane, after purchasing several of her titles. I'm not really sure what I think about the book. The relationship between Monica and Henry is like nothing I have read before. From the blurb, I know that she spent ten years with a Dom that was very abusive, leaving her heart broken and untrusting of anyone.

I found it hard to understand why she would open the type of business that she has and think that she could stay anonymous.

"Then Mr. Henry Warren walks into her world, offering her an escape from the pain that haunts the scars on her body. What he doesn’t understand is that a woman like Monica knows what pain is all too well – and no longer knows the difference between a Dom who will take care of her… and one who will destroy her."

Once they finally take that next step, she gets a note from her former Dom, saying he knows where she is and who she is seeing. This ends on a sort of HFN, but it is still a cliffhanger. There are two more sections of this trilogy and I look forward to reading them to see how this plays out.

Ich schreibe das Review auf Englisch, denn wer das nicht versteht, wird auch an dem Buch wenig Freude.I consider this a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Burma in the 20th centuries. Particularly in the first part of the book, the author balances the story of her family (and later herself) with the broader picture in an amazingly skillful manner. We learn about the specific challenges of her family of Chinese and Anglo-Burman descent, but we also learn how this was connected to politics of the British Empire and of Burma itself. The story of how her father built "The Nation" is certainly inspiring for anyone working in media, but it is also a little microcosmos which reflects the political climate. Most impressive, perhaps, is how Wendy Law-Yone succeeds in portraying the events that led to the dictatorship under the junta in a very neutral manner. So far, most accounts I've read or heard were highly ideological. Not so "Golden Parasol". Wendy Law-Yone portrays a democratic government that was weak and corrupt and generals who initially seemed to have good intentions. And she also does not neglect to emphasize that some things did improve once the military took over. She also does not romanticize the junta. They were/are bad. The book is a warning to all those, who believe that "a heavy hand" is the way to go.From what I hear, the book is also very popular in Burma (the only book of the author that has been translated), precisely for this reason. It gives not only us Western readers but also Burmese readers a uniquely balanced perspective into a troubled period.

Golden Parasol is a memoir of a newspaperman's daughter who deftly weaves her present life with her early upbringing and then manages to capture her father's exciting story in a unique way as she edits his manuscript begun during five years in the infamous Insein Prison. His is a fresh perspective of Burma's turbulent history as seen by an insider who wanted it to turn out differently. Part family detective, the author didn't give up in her search for unearthing her roots. Lucky for us that both father and daughter are excellent observers and writers.

I bought this book because I wanted to know more about what happened in Burma, whenI lived there and after I left. Some of the terrible killings that took place on the 8888I had heard about, and seen on TV. But never knew it was that bad,Our family left in 1964 and came to Australia, it was the best thing we ever did,as things were getting worse in Burma.After reading Golden Parasol I feel better informed aboutwhat happened in Burma.The Law Yone family must have had a terrible time when theirDad was taken away. Her poor Mother, and not forgetting howShe and her brother were also jailed.I enjoyed reading the book, it was entertaining and informative. I learntabout our country.My Father like Wendy's loved Burma, he would have preferred to stayIn Burma, But Mum and the rest if us wanted to leave. It was nota safe place any more.We stayed a many places mentioned in the book. Myitchina , Bhamo,Mongyu, Namkan.Both Mum and I were in Dr Seagraves hospital. Mum had two majorOperations, and I was there for one month a very sick little girl.Thanks for the book Wendy.

Ed Law-Yone was the proprietor of The National In Burma 1962 while there was a military coup. His daughter Wendy Law-Yone was left with the manuscript of his father's auto-biography and asked to tell his story. Golden Parasol is the memoir of the daughter of a Burmese journalist, political prisoner and revolutionary and follows her memories of her father, imprisonment and escape from the country.I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, as much as I try, and while this isn't a topic that interests me, I'm still glad to have read it. Wendy Law-Yone is a novelist and her memoir of her father's life reads like a novel which really helped me to get through this book I don't know much about Burma (now known as Myanmar) but now I know a little about the coup in 1962 (also suspect a CIA conspiracy).Ed Law-Yone seemed to be a complex and colourful character, and if his daughter makes you question his character a little bit, chances are there was something off about him. What he did in the effort to bring democracy to Burma was extraordinary but that doesn't mean he was a good man. I got the sense that Wendy was a little angry towards him. I'm not saying that he was a bad man but reading between the lines maybe there was a little bit of bitterness between the two; maybe a little neglect or annoyance towards all the time she spent at the newspaper.When I read a memoir or biography (what's the difference?) I tend to take what is written with a little grain of salt. I try to work out what might have been left out; I just wonder what secrets lay behind the writing. I really like how chapter 2 started, with some text from Ed's manuscript and Wendy's comments in-between (almost a little playful or sarcastic) and was a little disappointed that this tactic was abandoned but I think that would have made for a more difficult read.Golden Parasol may not be the type of book I normally pick up and I didn't think I would enjoy this one. I was interested in the narrative and how easy the author made this to read. I'm glad to have read this one, it wasn't fantastic but it was an interesting insight. My struggle with non-fiction continues, I think I would be better off reading topics I'm interested in instead of something like Golden Parasol.

I've long been a fan of Wendy Law-Yone, whose beautifully written novels and essays provide tantalizing snatches of insight into her fascinating family and their Burma connection. I've hoped that she would write a memoir to flesh out their story, and am delighted that Golden Parasol has finally arrived! It is a wholly satisfying chronicle--often poetic and always artfully constructed. Law-Yone is a skillful story-teller with a captivating tale to tell. Her father--adventurer, fearless publisher, determined revolutionary, and sometimes challenging family man--makes for terrific material, and Law-Yone uses it all to great advantage. She recounts her father's, and her family's, ups and downs with such humor and pathos that this reader feels that she has come to know the entire Law-Yone clan. A great bonus of reading Golden Parasol is the insight gained into Burma, a country about which most know so little. There are few writers who can give a personal account of Burma's very "heartbeat," and Wendy Law-Yone is likely the best. This is a book that delights in the reading and offers plenty to ponder when the last page has been turned.

Organizational Consulting; A Gestalt Approach is very dry and not an easy read. While some concepts stand out as important in client relationships most of the book is too academic for practical use.

Powerful stuff, Well presented

Gestalt theory is wide and deep, often conceptually slippery, and difficult to grasp, but it can impact one's life and work in profound and lasting ways. Nevis is certainly one of the masters at applying Gestalt in organizations and this is (so far) his masterwork on the subject. I truly believe that you will benefit from reading this book if you do so reflectively and let it do its "magic" on you.

That said, Gestalt is highly experiential and needs to be learned through the hands, mouth, ears, and eyes. If this book piques your interest, I hope that is only the beginning of your inquiry. A very good next step will be hands-on training.

Well-written and Useful

Nevis' book is thorough look at how Gestalt principles affect organizational consulting. I have not been a student of Gestalt ideas and methods since graduate school in a former life. Nevertheless it provides very good handles and tools for helping organizations learn what they need and to learn ways of acting in the future on their own.

With narrative precision and journalistic detail, the heartbreaking trajectory from abandonment and abuse to teen homelessness is laid bare in this book by Covenant House president Ryan and staff member Kelley, a former New York Times reporter. Telling the story of six young people who came to a Covenant House, the nationwide network of faith-based homes for homeless and runaway youth, Ryan and Kelley uncover their dire circumstances as well as efforts by Covenant House staff, and the kids themselves, to get off the streets. In addition, the authors highlight such issues as human trafficking, the shortcomings of the foster care system, and the financial cost of not caring for homeless youth, as well as providing suggestions and resources for mentoring, helping teen parents, and supporting LGBTQ youth. The compassionately told stories of survival are almost miraculous: a young man who had been abandoned and abused by his adoptive parents proudly returns to Covenant House to cook and serve a gourmet meal; another, bearing physical scars, walks the halls as an at-risk coordinator for a high school; and in the epilogue, we learn that a young woman who had survived drug addiction and prostitution has been accepted to college to study juvenile justice. About the Author

KEVIN RYAN is President of Covenant House International, which reaches 56,000 at-risk and street youth in more than twenty cities across six countries. Ryan is one of the country's most respected child advocates and his work has been covered by the New York Times and the Washington Post. He has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper 360, and other national media.

TINA KELLEY was a staff writer for the New York Times for ten years and shared in a Pulitzer Prize for the paper's coverage of the September 11 attacks. She wrote 121 "Portraits of Grief" profiles of the victims and is the author of two books of poetry, The Gospel of Galore and Precise.

You won't be sorry you read this book.

Full disclosure: I used to work for Faith Community in New Orleans which is the program mentioned in the book by Kevin Ryan so I am biased. Biased in the best possible way. Working for Covenant House was never a job it was a mission and a privilege and I don't think many can say that about their jobs.
Almost Home by Kevin Ryan will change the way you view homeless children in this country. It will take you inside what really happens in the lives of these forgotten and sometimes invisible children. Almost Home gives them a voice. Not only a voice but it shows how Covenant House through unconditional love and their covenant can reach any child if given the chance (and) not just reach them but give these children hope. HOPE.
When I worked for this agency I was young and single and now I am married and the mother of two young boys. My perspective has changed. So when I read Almost Home it touched me differently. I was now seeing Covenant House and these children's lives through the perspective "what if it were my child". I couldn't help being profoundly affected by their stories and the stories of the everyday heroes who work quietly to reach, love and transform these children by giving them HOPE and letting them know they matter, they are valuable and no matter what happens to them they are not defined by their circumstances.
What if it were your child? I pray if it were my child they would find their way to Covenant House where they would receive love, shelter, safety and HOPE.
Angels unaware I call it.
I imagine this book was a labor of love. It is not easy to see children suffer such hardships let alone write about them without becoming bitter. Yet, you do not feel that when reading Almost Home. You leave this book feeling affected and inspired and perhaps even ready and willing to be part of the mission that Covenant House stands for.
I know some of the people that Kevin Ryan wrote about in this book and have admired them for years hoping to emulate them in the best possible sense.
Almost Home is worth your time and your money. Buy the book. Share the book. (And) maybe next time you see a bunch of kids pandering for money on the street or standing off in a doorway doing everything they can to not make eye contact think of the book. Almost Home is not just another quick read. It is the embodiment of love and it is HOPE.

Full disclosure - I work at the Cov and have for many years. That said, with the publication of Almost Home, it's even more thrilling to be part of this amazing mission. Kevin Ryan and Tina Kelley tell the stories of the incredibly complex lives of homeless kids - and the interventions that helped them turn their lives around. The book is both inspirational and useful at the same time. Buy this book and read it - you'll be educated and empowered to help homeless kids as they move toward hope.

Overall, this book is very helpful as prep for the written exam -- BUT -- it has one very annoying problem. I have noticed several of the answers to the questions are wrong! I don't know if this is ASA's issue or the FAA's issue (don't know who writes the questions and the answers), but it needs to be more carefully proof-read and the errors need to be fixed! That's why it gets 4 and not 5 stars. Also found several errors in the companion textbook "Private Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge"..

This is a great book that allowed me to get a 87% on ...

This is a great book that allowed me to get a 87% on my written exam. It took about 6 hours to go through the book and another 3 hours on the included practice tests. They have done a good job on the questions - I would say at least 2/3's of the questions on my exam were in the book. When I got to the exam even though I was allocated 2.5 hours to complete, I finished in 40 minutes.

Great, exhaustive, book for your written!

In a word, this book is exhaustive. It covers each subject from every angle, so it's rather detailed. Even so, I would not give it anything less than 5 stars. The supplement is much better in the 2016. Remember, this is not a substitute for your other written training material even though you can pass the written with just this. You have to read around the subject.
