Natürlich durfte bei uns zur Adventszeit die kleine Leo Lausemaus auch nicht fehlen und so haben wir uns neben Peppa Wutz auch noch dieses Adventkalender Buch besorgt. Es sind eigentlich 24 kleine winzige Büchlein. Die aber sehr süß gestaltet sind. Zunächst hatte ich Angst das wieder die selben Geschichten drinn stehen, aber Gott sei Dank war dem nicht so. Es sind zwar nur ganz ganz kurze Geschichten drinn, süße Bilder und fertig. Aber die Kinder haben so eine Freude das jeder abwechselnd sich ein kleines Büchlein raus nehmen darf das es dann egal ist wie lang die Geschichte ist.......

ein immer wieder benutzbarer Adventskalender zum Vorlesen.Als Bett-Geschichte für Lausemaus-Fans sehr schön gestaltet und besonders stabil.Unsere 3 1/2-jährige Enkelin hat sich gefreut.

Sehr nette Geschichten vom kleinen Leo Mausemaus, der im Advent allerhand erlebt. Nett und kindgerecht geschrieben, bin aber von den Leo Lausemaus Büchern im Pixi-Format nichts anderes gewohnt.Das Fensterbild im A4-Format mit dem Motiv der Titelseite klebt übrigens noch immer gut sichtbar am Fenster.Das einzige Manko meinerseits ist, dass manche Geschichten wirklich sehr kurz sind. Als Gute-Nacht-Geschichten während der Adventzeit also nicht wirklich geeignet.

Meine Kleine liebt LL, aber diese Bücher findet sie doof und ich auch. Die Minibüchlein sind mit Bildern aus anderen Büchern illustriert, was sogar meiner 3-Jährigen auffällt und die Geschichten sind lahm, sinnbefreit und unvermittelt abgeschnitten. War eine sinnlose Investition und totale Verschwendung

Verkürzt die Wartezeit bis Weihnachten definitiv. In jedem Fenster steckt ein kleines Büchlein, mit je einer passenden Weihnachtsgeschichte zu Leo Lausemaus.Die Vorfreude steigt gewaltig.Achtung, sehr klein und auch klein gedruckte Schrift.

Sieht ganz nett aus. Leider echt sehr klein und die Geschichten daher sehr kurz. Unser 3 jähriger hat sich damit gelangweilt. In einem Buch sind die ersten beiden Seiten leider auch doppelt und die zweite Seite hat gefehlt, so dass die Geschichte nicht vollständig war. Schade. Hatten uns echt mehr davon erhofft.

Diesen Kalender kann ich nur empfehlen. Sehr schöne und kurze Geschichten rund um die Weihnachtszeit. Haben den Kalender dieses Jahr wieder zum Vorlesen vor dem Zu-Bett-gehen benutzt. Unsere Tochter (3) findet die Geschichten auch toll. Das Fensterbild mag sie am liebsten. Man kann den Kalender jedes Jahr aufs neue Aufstellen, da er super stabil ist (auch sie Seiten).

Habe den Kalender für meinen 8 Monate alten Patensohn gekauft. Ein schön gestalteteter Kalender mit süßen kleinen Büchern, die man auch noch an den Baum hängen kann... top.

TYPOS, TYPOS, TYPOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am absolutely amazed that this book was published with the number of typos in the recipes. I choose 7 recipes randomly from throughout this book and of those 7, six of them had HUGE ingredient typos. For example:
2 1/4 tablespoons of flour instead of 2 1/4 CUPS!
1 teaspoon of liquid ingredients to 4 1/4 cups of dry!
I will NEVER use this cookbook again as I cannot trust ANY of the recipes to be correct.
Yes it's a "pretty" book. Yes it has a large number of recipes. However, if the author/editor and publisher are not going to test the recipes or pay attention to the accuracy of the final galleys, then it would have been better NOT to publish it at all. Not only did I waste my money on the purchase of this book, but I also wasted my money on the ingredients for the 7 recipes I choose.

Quality not Quantity

I bought this book because it seemed to offer a wide variety of recipies. After bringing it home and taking a more thorough look through, I realized that many of the recipes are very similar. I've tried four different recipes so far and only one came out mediocre (at best). There were major ingredients mistakes in the other three recipes and the doughs just didn't have the right consistency. I am extremely disappointed with this book and will probably never use it again.

Forget the shortening

I, too, have noticed the homogeneity present in this book and, at first, was disappointed. However, in comparing several of the "same" recipes, I found them to be completely different. I am, for the most part, satisfied with the book. There are some typos and one has to wonder how that got by the editor. My one suggestion, and I cannot understate the importance of this: substitute butter for vegetable shortening. You will have both better flavor and consistency. And avoid the Norske Kroner recipe--there is NO body to the dough and it is impossible to handle.

There are few words that would do this story justice, deeply personal accounts told in an all-encompassing way, giving a flavor for the women of Afghanistan that will open new doors for readers of all ages and stages of life.

The prose is lovely and lyrical, the main storyteller is Rahima, the youngest of three sisters that were sold into marriage by their father when Rahima was just thirteen. Descriptive and emotive details give readers the insight into all of the confusion, fear, resentment and even obeisance to traditions that are centuries, if not millennia old. Rahima was the "son' of the family, the bacha posh, given freedoms that other women do not have, yet never allowing her to rise above her actual position and restrictions as a woman. With current and remembered events, a recurring thread from an unmarried aunt who tells the tale of their great-great grandmother a guard to the King's harem, and plenty of beauty centered on the vista,, the arts and poetry of the country, we see Rahima grow and expand her internal life and determination to be more than just the low bar set for the women of her country.

What remain constant and indefatigable are the women: every woman who is struggling to survive and adapt to a country where wars, power struggles, political upheaval and religious fanatics are part of the daily landscape, and bound to change repeatedly and without warning. This was an emotionally raucous ride, filled with highs and lows, fear and utter breath-holding as events are laid out to feed a reader's visual and emotional reactions in a way that is fulfilling and visceral, not overwhelming. In fact, the style and voice seem to encourage a sense of hope, tied to the hopes and dreams for different held by Rahima, and the pages almost turn themselves.

I had a difficult time believing that this was a debut novel from Nadia Hashimi: the writing is clear and evocative with information necessary to those unfamiliar with the traditions delineated without overburdening the text with explanations. The words flow beautifully and freely, and the ideas of gender inequality, the rich history and traditions of the Afghani people, and the struggle faced by its women are clearly presented and explained, leaving readers with a far better understanding and feel for the country that extends beyond the political rhetoric of the day.

I will always return to my own belief that well told fictionalized stories that show a culture, person or situation can be an invaluable asset to those who want a better understanding, or a unique perspective on another life and way of being. The Pearl that Broke it's Shell is one of those stories, managing to engage and enchant while all the while presenting a story rich in fact and tradition.

Kabul, 2009: Growing up in a family with five daughters and no sons, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and then, as they grow older, can rarely leave the house. Their mother struggles to support the family as their father becomes increasingly addicted to drugs. But one day their aunt, Khala Shaima, makes a suggestion: as a bacha posh, Rahima can become a son-dressing as a boy, with a boy's name, tread as a boy-until she is of marriageable age. She will be able to attend school and go to the marketplace. It's an old custom, but one that most of society turns a blind eye to when girls are young. And then Khala Shaima begins to tell a story that transforms Rahima's life: the story of her great-great-grandmother, Shekiba.
Kabul, 1909: Shekiba, the daughter of a rural farming family, is disfigured in an accident as a child. When her parents and siblings die in a cholera epidemic, she has no one left to support her and is treated as little better than a slave in a relative's home until she is able to escape her life of drudgery by dressing as a man. I was pulled into this story from the very beginning and couldn't stop reading until I was done. I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and A Thousand Splendid Suns and read this one with even more interest than the other two. I can't believe this a debut novel. Nadia Hashimi writes like that of a well-seasoned author and this is destined to become a bestseller for sure. I definitely didn't want this one to end and hope that there will be some sort of sequel. What a powerful read this was and one I won't soon forget!

I would recommend this product to anyone who is having a hard time understanding Anatomy and Physiology. I enjoyed this book because it broke the text book down into simpler terms and easier way to understand. I especially enjoyed the quizzes for each chapter. It also helped that I took this teacher :)

Nice reference, serves its purpose, but lacks slightly

If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would. It's a handy guide to study and review when you don't want to tote around the 30 lb anatomy textbook (maybe I exaggerate a little). But. It's not as comprehensive as it could be. For example, the book covers blood types and homozygous/heterozygous, phenotype/genotype, etc. If you were to study strictly from this guide, you wouldn't review those things. Also, the integument chapter lists the parts of the nail from top to bottom, so that's very helpful, but it doesn't give a list of all of the parts to the hair. It's an odd combination of being a very effective study tool that sometimes just doesn't quite give enough information.

It's very helpful by putting info into layman's terms, so it helps understand the information without being "wordy" and overwhelming. I just wish it went only slightly more deep into details. Even just a small section about the hair parts or "genotype is what is written on your genes. Phenotype is the thing you can actually see, like your hair color or blood type under a microscope."

Also, it isn't very formal in the way it is written, so there are a few typos and small editing issues, but, I didn't let that affect my rating because overall the book serves the purpose it was written for. I don't think you'd make 100s on tests if you only used this as a study guide, but it's definitely a great chapter review and a nice complement to the textbook.

Great tool for medical career oriented path finders!

I took A&P as a pre-requisite to forward my EMS career to Paramedic. I was told of this book and bought it. It was well written and put together. Michael Harrel, M.S. was also an instructor of my college. Although I didn't have him personally, with this book, he was there right along with my other instructor. The book greatly helped me through my A&P and Lab with flying colors and a A average. I would recommend this book to any medical professional who wants an extra edge on the subject of A&P.

About the Author

Howard Karger is Professor and Head of School, The University of Queensland. Howard was formerly Professor at the Graduate College of Social Work, University of Houston, and for seven years headed their doctoral program. He has been on the faculties of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Louisiana State University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Prof. Karger is an internationally recognized scholar in social welfare policy, and has authored or co-authored 10 books and more than 80 articles and book chapters. His articles have appeared in major social work and social policy journals in the U.S. and abroad. Howard sits on the editorial boards of six journals.

Among his other books are Shortchanged: Life and Debt in the Fringe Economy (Berrett-Koehler, 2005), which won the 2006 Independent Publishers Award in Economics/Finance/ Investment.

Prof. Karger is a two-time Senior Fulbright Scholar, having done postings at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1989) and the University of Zimbabwe (1994).

Informative and concise

I read this book (in conjunction with other texts) for a graduate section of a Social Policies class, and was impressed with the ease both authors transformed the abstract and dry into something exciting and inspiring.
No, social policy is not the most glamorous field for college students to enter, and unarguably the American system's shrinkage is going to pose severe problems in the next couple of years, but emotional and moral rewards of doing what is right make this venture worth it. Alternately, the authors balance this view with pragmatic political approaches that equip the reader with introductory strategies to hold off or even staunch further erosion of American social policy.
The book by itself is enjoyable, but advanced classes should use the American Welfare State as a supplementary text for historical background.

This is truly a great book, and you'll want to keep it for a reference even after your classes. Don't forget to buy the supplemental Internet Update ((...) ISBN 0801332389). It's a great resource and really helps when you need to do research or write a term paper!

Clear language, comprehensive

I've been reading Karger and Stoesz for years. This is a good, relevant edition to understanding social welfare policy. However, the 4th edition leaves out the historical perspectives; readers will want to refer to earlier editions or supplemental sources for historical content.

A great pictorial into the weapons and gear through history.

I liked the book for what it is. If you want to learn details of various military actions, wars, or insight into leaders and power struggles, this 8th not the book. This is a pictorial review of weapons and military gear through the ages. Also machines of war such as ships, planes, tanks from early on and into the present. More of a browsing coffee table book than a reference book. But the pictures are very good, the book is quality and the explanations accompanying them is interesting. I enjoyed the book, and it might spark enough interest for someone to want to dig deeper into history. It is world wide not just American military items. Hope this is helpful.

My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.

This book is simply gorgeous to look at whether your a military history 'geek' like me, or not. The book is large in size & scope & has tons of amazing pictures of weapons, uniforms, battles etc. This book strikes just the right balance between military 'eye candy' for the novice military buff, and snippets of information/opinion about the hundreds of weapons on display for history majors like myself. Many books try and get this balance between information/entertainment and very few succeed--but this book hits the mark--it will stay in my collection for years to come.

About the Author

James MacGregor Burns (1918-2014) received his doctorate in political science from Harvard. In 1971, Burns won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for his biography Roosevelt: Soldier of Freedom. He was a former president of the American Political Science Association, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and served as Distinguished Leadership Scholar at the Academy of Leadership that bears his name at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.

The world of leadership is examined through a sweeping assessment on its power and purpose to its origins in James MacGregor Burns's book, Leadership. This book is a very comprehensive overview of the study of leadership as it distinguishes not only what are the two basic styles of leadership: transforming and transactional, but evaluates the theory and practice of leadership skills as well. Burns stated in Leadership, "I define leadership as leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations�-the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations-of both leaders and followers" (19).

Throughout the book, Burns discussed the leadership styles of political leaders to religious and social leaders. From Martin Luther King, Jr to Moses to Mahatma Gandhi to Napoleon, plus Machiavelli and even Adolf Hitler, Burns cited how these leaders made vital distinctions between wants and needs. According to Burns, "the process of leadership must be seen as part of the dynamics of conflict and of power; that leadership is nothing if not linked to collective purpose; that the effectiveness of leaders must be judged not by their press clippings but by actual social change measured by intent and by the satisfaction of human needs and expectations" (3).

Interesting Topic, not well Executed

Leadership is a secondary source history/political science book drawing on historical examples, psychology, and some philosophical concepts on governance. Burns goal with the book is to establish a foundation for the study of leadership, combining the studies of the leaders themselves and the followers. It covers the individual traits of leaders, their relationship to followers, and how they managed to accomplish great things or have such great impact.

This textbook has a number of stylistic problems that make it difficult to read, despite its interesting substance. Its organization is shaky and many of the chapters and sections have no clear intro or conclusion to tie his thesis together. The book is a dry, boring read that meanders between secondary sources, historical anecdotes, and the author's own biased perceptions.

Burns seems to be trying to place a lateral beam across several pillars with his leadership school. This isn't nearly as groundbreaking as the blurbs on the back of the book claim. Burns' conclusions are limited in scope, and don't leave a strong impression on the reader.

He overuses Sigmund Freud, conceding that psychoanalysis of historical figures is not particularly accurate or helpful, then goes forward and uses it anyway. He identifies few patterns, constantly going back to the same old "blame the parents" approach to psychoanalysis. His occasional delving into the sexual habits of famous leaders was purely conjecture and not worthy of this text.

Burns narration of historical events and the rise of certain leaders is mediocre. It isn't heavy on detail, yet the prose is still difficult to follow. The historical examples do not clearly demonstrate his thesis. He provides limit context, assuming the reader is fully apprised of the historical events. This is arrogant and lazy. I can only assume the book is meant for a graduate-level audience who have strong backgrounds in history and political science. It certainly wasn't marketed this way (Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award).

Burns take on Mao Zedong was troubling to me. In Mao's case, his leadership ended when he took power at which point he became a tyrant. By Burns own admission, a tyranny is not leadership. He speaks glowingly of these revolutions despite the bloodshed, poverty, misery, and war it brought to the respective countries. His positive view of the Cultural Revolution in China is absolutely stunning, ignoring its atrocities and utter failure.

The book was published in 1978, so some of these events were contemporary. We know more today about the Soviet Union and the experiences of Communist China in the 20th century. It is fair to say Burns was very wrong in his opinion of these two political systems and their relevance to his school of leadership. The other sections are much better.

Why give it 3 stars with all these problems? Burns combines multiple disciplines for a fairly reasonable case against compartmentalizing social sciences (this was his implicit objective). His study of leadership became the basis for later works, especially those covering popular and business leadership. Finally, I for the most part agree with his primary thesis and the supporting definitions early in the book. So it gets an average grade from me.

A Classic for the 21st Century

When I was a doctoral student, I wrote my dissertation about transforming leadership. As a full-time doctoral faculty member at one of America's leading online universities, I now mentor students in leadership and organizational change, among other specializations.

Leadership, by James MacGregor Burns the Pulitzer Prize winning author, is the most important book I have read in the field of leadership. In it, Burns coined the term, Transforming Leadership, and distinguished it from its more mundane counterpart, Transactional Leadership.

In so doing, Burns catalyzed much of the theorizing and research into transforming leadership (also called transformational leadership, visionary leadership, and charismatic leadership, among others) from the latter part of the 20th century through today.

In this foundational book, Burns argued that there was a "crisis of leadership" because people did not understand the essence of leadership. Whereas traditional, transactional leaders concern themselves with exchanging money for services, the modern, transforming leader "seeks to satisfy higher needs, and engages the full person of the follower" in a "collective purpose," that is, a common vision or shared goal. The end result is leadership "that can produce social change that will satisfy followers authentic needs" (p. 4).

A classic, the message of this book is as meaningful and urgent today as it was when Burns wrote it. We need a new form of leadership to help us deal with the problems of an ever shrinking, interconnected world. Those who would be part of a collective effort to make the world a better place, would do well to read this book.
