World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea—the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success—but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn’t foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals—personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

Praise for Mindset

“Will prove to be one of the most influential books ever about motivation.”—Po Bronson, author of NurtureShock

“A good book is one whose advice you believe. A great book is one whose advice you follow. I have found Carol Dweck’s work on mindsets invaluable in my own life, and even life-changing in my attitudes toward the challenges that, over the years, become more demanding rather than less. This is a book that can change your life, as its ideas have changed mine.”—Robert J. Sternberg, IBM Professor of Education and Psychology at Yale University, director of the PACE Center of Yale University, and author of Successful Intelligence

“If you manage any people or if you are a parent (which is a form of managing people), drop everything and read Mindset.”—Guy Kawasaki, author of The Art of the Start and the blog How to Change the World

“Highly recommended . . . an essential read for parents, teachers [and] coaches . . . as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“A serious, practical book. Dweck’s overall assertion that rigid thinking benefits no one, least of all yourself, and that a change of mind is always possible, is welcome.”—Publishers Weekly

“A wonderfully elegant idea . . . It is a great book.”—Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., author of Delivered from Distraction

Nothing more than a 277 page infomercial
By Ray
If you need to read a book to convince you that effort and positive thinking (a "growth mindset") are better than giving up and negative thinking (a "fixed mindset"), this book may be helpful. If you already know this, this book is an utter waste of time because there is absolutely nothing more to it and absolutely nothing new, psychologically or otherwise.
As a parent and a teacher what I expected to learn, and what the author continually insinuated she was going to tell me, was how to identify mindsets in others and strategies for encouraging change in those with a defeatist mindset. Instead she offers 212 mind- numbingly repetitive pages of anecdotes about successful vs. unsuccessful students, athletes, and CEOs, that merely describe attitudes peppered with tedious platitudes along the lines of “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again.”
It is not until the last chapter, “Changing Mindsets” that the author tells the reader she has developed a workshop which miraculously teaches people how to change their mindset. But instead of telling us how this is achieved or describing what actually happens in these workshops, she merely gives us a string of testimonials and informs us that she has developed a computer program called “Brainology”™ which mirrors these life-altering workshops. The End. You can go to a website to buy the"Brainology"™ program.

Interesting theory, yet lacking depth
By Peng Jin
I first came across the author in a TED video. Her talk about how "not yet" generates far more power than "fail" was interesting and I decided to buy her book to further read into her studies. The book in general is an interesting piece of work. I like the way she describes the "growth mindset". However, most of the book seems to focus on discussing the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" applied to different fields. So it does get very predictable and tedious. There is far not enough discussion about how to better develop the "growth mindset". It is like the author uses the entire book to emphasize how important "growth mindset" is but doesn't really offer much help. In particular, I don't like how she attributes every corporate failure to "fixed mindset". I think it is way too generalizing and over-simplifying.

A waste of your money, time and intelligence.
By A. Walsh
This is a silly book and so repetitive it really is unreadable. The whole book is about how some people have a fix mindset (bad) and others have a growth mindset (good). Those with a fixed mindset think ability and success is predetermined. Those with a growth mindset think you can keep learning and changing your potential and abilities. After this book, I think there is a regression mindset because I am surely dumber for having read this book.
Her examples and anecdotes are ridiculous and also repetitive. One that sticks out in mind is that she makes a serious example of how she went fly-fishing with a group and she caught a fish and no one else did. Some guys asked her husband how he was coping at dinner later. To me, this seems like an innocent tease but she makes it into a full psychological judgement of how these guys were so affected by their failure to catch a fish because they have a fixed mindset.
