The book "Looking for a Mr. Kim in Seoul" is a welcome addition to the growing list of English language books on Korean culture. As a collection of Korean proverbs, it is an unique contribution to our understanding of Korean ethos and psyche. There may be similar publications in Korean but this is the first in English that I have come across. The selection and coverage of Korean "expressions" are comprehensive for a relatively small book. I am impressed by the number and the variety of topics that the authors have collected. The English translations are incisive and, above all, very readable. The extended commentaries, including some etymological notes on obscure words, are readily understandable and enjoyable even for readers with little previous knowledge of Korean culture. A job well done. This book is helpful for students of Korean culture, history, language and ethnography, from the high school level on up. It is an enjoyable introduction to aspects of Korean history and recent politics as well as various customs and rituals. It will make an excellent supplementary reading for students in senior high schools and colleges studying non-Western culture and history. About the Author
SANG-HUN CHOE was a member of the Associated Press team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for coverage of the Korean War’s No Gun Ri incident. He is currently the Korea correspondent for the International Herald Tribune. Chris CHRISTOPHER was the bureau chief in Korea for the Associated Press from 1999-2005. He is currently the AP’s bureau chief in Turkey. He graduated from Yale University.

Buy it and hold on to it!

Man oh man is this book hard to find. If you have the chance to pick it up, buy it and don't think twice. I have no clue why it is so rare but I know that Amazon is the only major online retailer that I can find it on. Moving on.
This book has much to laugh about. It ties in language, culture, and storytelling. You might read this book cover-to-cover and only take away a few memorable stories. I can guarantee you that some Koreans won;t even know the etymology of some of their own words/phrases but you sure as hell well.
It's endearing, funny, and entertaining. It's not exactly appropriate for language study as many of the proverbs and idioms don't exactly make their way into everyday conversation but the history behind these expressions will make you smile if nothing else.
The authors know what they are talking about and are not afraid to share some quirky information with you. Well done!

Talk like a Korean

This book will make smile, laugh and think. It has a great many aphorism, proverbs, sayings that shows the true nature of both the traditional and the modern Korean people. One can smile in recognition of the truth of the sayings, laugh out loud at the earthy diction, and ponder over the similarity of the human condition. Well written book on a fascinating subject.
