As humans, death—its certainty, its inevitability—consumes us. We make it the subject of our literature, our art, our philosophy, and our religion. Our feelings and attitudes toward our mortality and its possible afterlives have evolved greatly from the early days of mankind. Collecting these views in this topical and instructive book, W. M. Spellman considers death and dying from every angle in the Western tradition, exploring how humans understand and come to terms with the end of life.

Using the work of archaeologists and paleoanthropologists, Spellman examines how interpreting physical remains gives us insight into prehistoric perspectives on death. He traces how humans have died over the centuries, both in the causes of death and in the views of actions that lead to death. He spotlights the great philosophical and scientific traditions of the West, which did not believe in an afterlife or see the purpose of bereavement, while also casting new light on the major religious beliefs that emerged in the ancient world, particularly the centuries-long development of Christianity. He delves into three approaches to the meaning of death—the negation of life, continuity in another form, and agnosticism—from both religious and secular-scientific perspectives.

Providing a deeper context for contemporary debates over end-of-life issues and the tension between longevity and quality of life,A Brief History of Deathis an illuminating look at the complex ways humans face death and the dying.

Have a dictionary handy.
By Gerald Farber
Dr. Spellman is not afraid to put his education and his vocabulary on display in this fascinating "tour" of the history of funerary rites, and religious views. This is not an "easy" read but is a deeply satisfying one. If you like superb writing and a look from the other side of the mirror on the subject of death you came to the right book.
For a short book (a mere 211 pages) I got an excellent "education" from one who is likely, a great teacher.
Some things to consider:
1-There are other books with the same title so be careful that you buy the right one;
2- While not overtly anti-religious his clear implications are that to believe in life after death is to live in a child's dream;
3- If you are sensitive about attacks on your chosen religion, approach this book with care. Just discussing the facts is enough to make priests, rabbi's, iman's and other clergy look like fools or charlatans, or both.
4-Don't buy this book if you don't like erudite writing and skillful phrasing. He characterizes Alzheimer's effects with a pithy phrase that really sums up its effects on humans.In his words it results in "cognitive plunder".
In sum: I recommend this book.

THOROUGH VIEW
By Mr. Merrimack
The book is much more than a "Brief" history of death. In reality, it is a very thorough view of the subject.

Great book
By Lomani
It's a tough book to read glad I'm taking a reading course which requires we right vocab words because there are an infinite amount of words I really don't know. But it's a great book once you understand the words Spellman really gets in touch with every cultural thought of death.
