Their buzzes, beeps, bells, and tunes have disrupted countless classes, movies, and meals; public auditoriums now have signs posted prominently asking people to turn their cell phones off; cities such as Santa Fe have banned their use in automobiles. But these little connection gadgets have become ubiquitous because they are so useful--many would blanch at the thought of losing their cell phone. Cell phones are useful because of the science, technology, and design that are blended to make them function.
In this work, authors Michele Sequeira and Michael Westphal help young people explore this now-commonplace, socially important gadget that connects today's youth with their friends. The underlying science and technologies, and some of the history that has influenced the development of cell phones, are discussed. Emphasis is given to building science and technology concepts through simple analogies with commonplace items and ideas.

It's a hit!
By Amazon Customer
Ok, I admit I have not read it yet. But it's because I can't get my copy back! I loaned the book to the science teacher at my son's school, and asked her to take a look to see what she thought. She liked what she saw, and gave it to a 3rd grader who loves science to see if he liked it and could understand it. He did, so much so that he begged to keep it to finish! Clearly it's a hit! I bought another copy for the school to keep in the science class. And eventually, I and my 4th grader will get our copy back to read!

By S. Wright
The nine numbered chapters of this book have contents as follows:
Chapter 1 (12 pages) Introduction: What Is a Cell Phone?
Describes history of communication by shouting, flag waving, smoke signals, telegraph, telephone and then lists requirements for a cell phone system: radio receivers and transmitters controlled by computer hardware and software.
Chapter 2 (14 pages) Plastic, the Shell and Face of Your Phone
Explains properties of plastic using terms including crystalline, amorphous, atoms, molecules, monomer, polymer, elastomer, crosslinking, and vulcanization.
Chapter 3 (18 pages) Cell Phones Don't Think Like You Do

Chapter 4 (24 pages) Semiconductor Chips, the Brains
How conducting and insulating regions of a semiconductor can be constructed to form integrated circuits containing many transistors, and how a transistor model can be built using Play-Doh.
Chapter 5 (18 pages) A Cell Phone's Logic Is Written in Its Software
Explains how data is stored and retrieved from RAM (random-access memory) and how good programming can involve choice of an appropriate algorithm, illustrated by comparison of an insertion sort with a merge sort.
Chapter 6 (18 pages) Getting the Message Through Call Transmission
Discusses radio terms such as amplitude, frequency, wavelength, analog, digital, modulation, and explains how cell towers and mobile telephone switching offices can handled multiple users by use of TDMA (time division multiple access), FDMA (frequency division multiple access), or CDMA (code division multiple access) protocols.
Chapter 7 (18 pages) Batteries Are Gas Tanks Full of Electrons
Describes involvement of electrons in chemical reactions, and goes on to discuss alkaline, lithium, and nickel-metal-hydride batteries.
Chapter 8 (16 pages) Good Design: Bringing the Technologies Together
Discusses criteria and people involved in the design process.
Chapter 9 (8 pages) Thank You for Turning OFF Your Cell Phone
